What is your sulfur content in your diesel in aus? Toyota's with DPF have restrictions regarding this. If you have Both high and low sulfur diesel, are the pumps marked Good enough? In Norway Toyota Hilux and Lc have had DPF since 2012 with little problems, but we only have Diesel with low sulfur with Max 10ppm.

I was driving behind an SR5 yesterday (I assume a 2015/16 model) and it was blowing heaps of smoke. It was a panasonic air con company vehicle so I highly doubt they would have done a DPF delete. My feeling is that its DPF is blocked and no longer doing the job.

Apparently the 2015/16 200 series landcruisers suffer from the same problem, however from what I've read if you purchased your vehicle from Nov 2016 or later it has been fixed.

For reference, my colleague has a 2016 Mitsubishi Challenger which has 9000kms on the ODO (not even 10k kms!!) and it has been blowing heaps of smoke. This is what his tail pipe looks like:

Getting a delete next week. To avoid all this trouble. Then refit it when I upgrade in a year or two. No way am I paying for it when warranty is up.

I noticed yesterday when i took off from an intersection that I had left a cloud of smoke behind, it looked to be more blue in colour than black, I think the DPF was also doing a burn at the time, haven't noticed it since, any ideas ??

Speak to your service department.
There is a software update and they do a forced regen. If they catch it in time then you'll be fine. If not then you'll be up for a new dpf. I'm writing this from the customer lounge as mine is having it's dpf replaced today.

This is how mine ended up

I had the same issue with my 2016 Hilux. Spoke with the service department and they ordered a new dpf (under warranty). Wasn't impressed, since my car had just done 30,000ks. Dealer was accommodating but I complained to Toyota about the issues I was having i.e tail shaft clunk (stopped occurring after 4th attempt in fixing) and the plumes of smoke.

Great i'd better book it in for a forced regen before I get to that stage, that's not a good look for Toyota !!

I contacted them and they said bring it in asap, there's a new software update for many things and the DPF regen is a major part of that update. This update was only released last week, I wonder if this update will fix the clunky tailshaft................

The update is common to Prado/Hilux/Fortuner. The paperwork says Prado ECM update. I had an interim update as mine was being done under warranty but it appears the final update has been released and is now part of a recall program.

If its any consolation I got to my 70K service with mine before it became too much of a problem.

I also think that compared to other brands Toyota are far better to deal with. My tailshaft, auto software, turbo replacement and now dpf have all been delt with in a satisfactory fashion. Every issue with my Ranger was news to Ford and everything they couldn't fix was written off as a characteristic of the vehicle.

Hope you have a good resolution Beta

I contacted dealer about this DPF software update as I was getting "heaps" of smoke during the DPF burns. Recently had 50K service (done elsewhere) so they only had it for less than 3 hrs. So far, the update appears to be an improvement on the previous "smoke machine" I was driving!!

Just got my 30000 service done and complained about the smoke show I was having even stationary at lights. Checked it out and will be getting a new dpf system next month.
They need the car for 2 days apparently
I’ll either be getting rid of it prior to warranty end or buying extended warranty. Up until it started blowing smoke it’s been a great truck

Now at 57000Kms the "Smoke Machine" has returned with increased intensity - I'm now getting other drivers tell me "get your car fixed, it stinks when driving behind you!". Revving it during a DPF burn when at traffic lights creates a huge plume of smoke.
So it's back again to the dealer. Can I guess that the work done some 6000kms ago was "half a job?"
It's a great vehicle other that anything that the dealer is involved with - and they ask me why I don't get them to do my regular servicing!!

Does your regular servicing use the Toyota genuine oil ?
