DPF blowing smoke, ECM update, Replacement etc

Well after making a complaint to the Service Manager I have my car booked in again tomorrow. I've had to wait until the car went into a regen which it did around the corner from the house. So it's going to Toyota tomorrow for a long drive up the freeway while on their scanning tool to record what's happening and send the file off to Toyota. I'll keep you posted

Hi,

I find the DPF process will run every 400km. I've also had a second (much shorter) regen occur a few times the next time I have driven the vehicle. I think it does a self check and if there is still the need it runs a quick DPF burn again.

Some other people have indicated that using power mode rather than normal or eco modes means more regular DPF cycles every 200km travelled.

Thanks, interesting point is that my fuel consumption went up to 1.6!!! after it doing that twice, sure only been driving in town but it only got new at wheels on it with the same size as stock so went up like 4dl since last

Well got the car back from Toyota. They test drove it for 30 minutes. At the beginning of the drive the DPF was 103% blocked. At the completion of the drive the DPF was 46% blocked. They handed the car back telling me the DPF System was functioning correctly and doing what it is suppose to do. They handed the car back and it was still in "Regeneration" mode.

So, according to Toyota (not the dealer) the DPF can do the "Regeneration" process for a varied length of time and a burn taking in excess of an hour whilst driving along the freeway is "normal".

I know this is not the case. Even their own Owner Manual says that if the DPF is so blocked that you get a message on the dash, you only need to drive it for 20-30 minutes. But when the DPF is normally functioning and doing it's random Regeneration it can take an hour?? Me thinks not!!

Other Hilux owners I've spoken with are having similar issues but many are not and report that the Regeneration process takes somewhere between 10-20 minutes. That is much more reasonable and consistent with all other manufacturers.

Don't really know where to go from here since the manufacturer is denying there is an issue?

Today i took it for a short spin and it did the same thing, seems to me it is starting to do this too often?

Doesn`t regen properly/fully standing still unless it is a forced regeneration, so the vehicle must be moving at a speed of at least 30 mph for 10-20 minutes.
Check your handbook for the exact regen instructions.

The thing is it only started when i was standing still, then it stopped as if it was done, next day same thing.

Done that, it seems it's not the dpf really but the egr. Getting a failed test when using one of those obd readers.

Just for interest, how long will the DPF last, it is a consumable so it is going to cost, how much could cause a fright methinks

I find it hard to believe that Toyota couldn't see a problem or even question why the filter would be 103% blocked when you delivered (drove) the car to them. But if they want to be stubborn and ignore the issue, they could argue that the system is operating (somewhat) for the filter to clear itself 50% in the time they had it.

Just a thought... I wonder if the DPF was actually blocked? AFAIK most DPF systems use pressure differential sensors where the ECU reads the pressure before and after the filter to determine how blocked it is. There must be a way for Toyota to verify these sensors are functioning correctly and not causing unnecessary regen's?

Could it be worthwhile speaking with a couple of diesel specialists and quizzing them? DPF's are not a new concept, but they obviously are to Toyota Australia.

Hi all I was just wondering roughly how long your dpf runs for? I just broke my own previous record of 2 hours by an hour! That's right 3 hours of burning! Can anyone confirm that this is very much over the top?

I am on my 3rd DPF replacement.......I am well over the lip service and the constant smoke.....there is a issue and toyota continue to take my car back and do various things to it. I'm done with it....

Canterbury 10 how many K's have you done? What kind of driving? What were the symptoms each time the DPF failed? That doesn't sound good the DPF has been replaced 3 times.

my hilux is a 2.4 workmate and has 2200kms on it atm (about 1 month old). I've seen it do dpf burns in park about 4-5 times. The process takes no longer than 5 mins and I ALWAYS sit in the car and wait for it to finish. The car revs to about 1100-1200rpm and the exhaust gets real hot. In fact, I've tested it with a IR thermometer and the exhaust tip gets to 170degrees C. I've not notice it doing a passive burn on the freeway, but that's not to say it hasn't happened. I drive about 60kms a day, mostly freeway. I try to avoid short trips which as I understand can really stuff up your dpf as it gets blocked real quick.

I see more and more of the newer 1 and 2 GD hiluxs bellowing out blue smoke when they are driving , do you think this is all due to the DPF problems ? When I saw the smoke is mostly blue I was thinking engine problems .
Euro cars have had DPF ,s for over 10 years now , exhaust tips stay stainless steel color . The euro systems with ad blue just use a injector near the DPF that injects the ad blue directly into it .
What's wrong with toyotas system ? Wrong engine oil ? To much ash ?
