New Diesel Engine (1GD)

Postby Rich on Wed, 22 Feb 2017 2:22 +0000

So the new 2.8 diesel engines have been out in Australia for around 16 months now. Mechanically, has anyone had any issues and are they a better engine than the previous 1KD in terms of maintenance?

I imagine no one has clocked up enough kms to know if the injectors are still an issue and need replacing like the previous engine, and similar issues.

The previous had injector issue, EGR issues, injector seat issues and there were some stories around death rattles etc.

no major issues to my knowledge , there was one member on here who needed a new motor but that covered under warranty.

i have no doubt we will have EGR and DPF issues due to the way they clog up over time.
I do believe the 1GD is far less stressed , running lower compression so hopeully the injector and seals issue are gone also.

With lower compression and with head and block development, isuzu style injectors etc its certainly come along way..not on knifes edge to make the same power. A timing chain rather than a belt. Toyota 's choice to have an independent injector for the dpf eliminates alot of the issues other brands have with oil dilution. Even a $350000 kenworth can have issues...but i think toyota have made great leaps forward with the 1GD. Just ask the people working on them. i love mine.....so far!

How Many Kms have you guys got on your 1GD engines?

I was told that Diesel engines such as this are not really suited to driving around town with lots of short trips, is that correct?

Ive only covered 8000 so far . Low compression clean diesels arent as prone to glazing like the older smokers. having said that Im not sure i would buy one if i lived in the CBD where a small hatchback is more suited. Im in a regional area and its perfect around here.

Complete Toyota development I believe.

I've travelled 30000km. Just seems to be getting better and better.

I heard that BMW assisted Toyota with the design and in return got access to their Hybrid technology.

i hope thats not the case - BMW are not known for making reliable engines , so hopefully they only assisted Toyota with the pollution control system and nothing else.

Check your injectors about every 10,000k.
