Is it a whistle like when you let air out of a balloon neck? If so it sounds like a boost leak. Check all your inlet joins

yea its just like a police siren and like i throught it was normal due to the fact i brought it new and has always done it but its just making me think why cos other turbos cars dont make that sound unless on high boost or boosting up... will have a look at it with joins next if any other thoughts or other ppl with same issue let me know if you fixed it or if its normal havent had toyota look at it yet..

By chance on those days do you have your window down and have a snorkel fitted?

I had my car do it a 100k kms.
It happend on the highway, i thought i was being pulled over by the police it was that loud but it never went away. It ended up being the exhaust wheel on the turbo (damaged Fins).
i have also had a boost leak and they are easly found as oily air will stain the area due to blow by.

New turbo fitted under warranty - siren like noise

Postby MarkTGood on Mon, 29 May 2017 6:46 +0000

Hi Guys.
Just though I'd throw this up here to help anyone searching for symptoms in the future.

2016 Hilux - 61000km

A couple of weeks ago my hilux started making a whistle noise like a dentist drill/ siren when under load. It was most evident between 2500 rpm to 3000rpm and was definitely turbo related as it would change pitch and volume directly with changes in throttle position.

There was no noticeable change in performance and no obvious signs like black smoke or the like to indicate anything majorly wrong. It was also an instant change not something that gradually built up.

I checked for things like a leaking or split turbo hose and the intercooler but could find nothing wrong there.

Booked the car into my local dealer and they took some video and audio recording and forwarded them to Toyota. Over the next couple of weeks they needed the car back to try a few different things and get some more info. Finally today I had the car in and they changed the turbo and the noise is gone. The car may have a little more power but I think it's probably more the power of suggestion. I was hoping to get a look at the old turbo but things were pretty hectic when I picked up the ute so I didn't bother trying.
Hope this helps someone in the future

2016 hilux sr5 iv also had a turbo replacement under warranty, sounding like a siren and also had blown rocket cover gasket as they said was over boosting at the time as well.

One of the vanes might have broken off, it's happened to the N70's as well. Interesting noise it has!

Thanks for the thread lads.
Finished watching the video clip and have the exact same sound. Just hit 41k km. Hope the new turbos a little more robust.
