Valve clearences

Postby crfpaul on Thu, 26 May 2016 6:40 +0000

I'm after some advise,
Hilux 2007 T/D.
I have just checked my valve clearences and they are not that far out of spec. Should I adjust them or will loose exhaust valves cause any issues?
Spec- in 0.20-0.30. Mine are 0.23
Spec-exh 0.35-0.45 mine are 0.50.
As you can see inlet valves are within tolerance but exhaust valves are 0.05mm loose.

This may be a long shot but you have a lot of clearance to play with on the inlet. I did mine and needed like 9 buckets. But when you mark them all and list what clearances you have you may find that you can move some of the inlet buckets over to the exhaust side - giving inlet more clearance but in spec and bringing exhaust back into spec - 9 went to like 2 once it was all said and done. More clearance is not a bad thing - less clearance is not so good as the valve is retreating in the cylinder head....

Davo94 its done 240,000klm.
Mrmal I have always known that loose clearences are not a bad thing in petrol engines, I just wasn't sure about diesel ones. Thanks for your input.

Don't worry about it, their fine.
Big job checking the valve clearances. You have to wonder why TMC designed it that way.

No shims, just the buckets, and ridiculous that you have to pull out the camshafts to change the clearances.

Just had the 40k service done on the 2014 TD and the Toyota service centre said they don't check the clearances until they think something is going wrong. Good/Bad?
