Injector rattle on 2016 Hilux

I have found BP Diesel (Standard - Not Ultimate) makes my 2016 SR5 run a lot smoother. I used Shell Diesel a couple of tanks early on and it really ran rough. With BP for close to 12 months it is regularly returning economy around 7.5l/100km in eco-mode. Does the non ultimate still contain 50+ cetane?

Hmmm.......Please use Flashlube Diesel Conditioner in these vehicles. It will up the fuel quality, cetane. It also helps lubricate the injectors. Two main fuels to use. BP Ultimate Diesel and Caltex Vortex Premium Diesel.
These vehicles are designed around the 50+ cetane European standard. Same as the KUN26 models.

When i start up the car and if i do a slight rev there is a loud rattle from the engine, if i drive normally for a while it stops and it doesn't happen if i rev it when it's warmed up. Any ideas?

Did ya do a search mate? More that likely injectors. Pages upon pages of info on here if ya use the search!

I reckon it's totally normal. Every diesel I've owned rattled like a can of nails until it had warmed up. I'm not really sure why but I don't believe it is a fault. My advice is be gentle with it until it is warm.

true that it could be normal, but I spoke to my friend who know's quite a lot about cars and he said yep it can be normal but also that it could be the injectors or some other thing I forgot the name of. But will see, soon time for service anyway i think.

true that it could be normal, but I spoke to my friend who know's quite a lot about cars and he said yep it can be normal but also that it could be the injectors or some other thing I forgot the name of. But will see, soon time for service anyway i think.

I've accepted that it is normal in my D4D. I've had my hilux for 280,000kms and after two SCVs and two sets of injectors, the last set being genuine denso, it still rattles when it is cold.

It is always worth however as The Roo suggested, having a quick check of the diagnostics.

Had it in for service.. they found nothing and the DPF was also good they said. But of course they had had it inside during the night so it wasn't really cold when they tested it... .

Hi TheRoo,

I need you expert opinion on this. Whats the difference between the cold rattle and the loud knock during startup (cracking) caused by severe injector seal problem? Are these sounds all caused by the combustion gases leaking out of the injector seats? is this the same as the sound when you have cracked/failed pistons? I am worried because I am up for an injector and fuel pump replacement tomorrow. Since i have replaced the seats for more than 3x in a span of 3 yrs I might have clogged the oil pickup screen and affected the piston lubrication. Another question is, if I change my oil and it drained right out of the pan, does that mean that the oil pickup is not clogged? Why will it be clogged if I still have an oil filter which I think filters finer particles compared to the oil pickup screen? Should I be getting zero or max dip stick oil level if I have a clogged oil pickup? Thanks in advance

tjingles, only way to check the intake pickup strainer is look through the drain hole with a strong torch after draining engine oil. It should be clean, and if not it is blocked. 3* times seal change is not good!

Cold when i have noticed it is like -3 celcius but it can get quite a lot colder up here but just recently heard it the first time when it was around -3 to maybe 3+ celcius. It sounds like there is a metal piece loose in the engine and it rattles when i push the gas pedal down to go up to maybe 1-1,5k rpm. Once i reverse or go forward it is not happening.

You say that it stops when you move the vehicle, are you sure that it's not in the transmission - clutch throwout bearing perhaps?
