Injector rattle on 2016 Hilux

Postby comms1 on Sat, 09 Apr 2016 7:17 +0000

Hi Does anybody with the latest Hilux experience loud injector rattle between around 2200-2800 RPM?

I've recently bought my first Hilux (2.8 Auto - done 4000km's) and I find the injector rattle noise is really bad. Its noticable when warming up from cold and I get that, but once its running fully hot it doesnt go away. No rattle when the engine is under no stress and low rpm but when under even light accelerating throttle between around 2200-2800 rpm the rattle becomes constant, very noticable when climbing any hills when the revs increase into that RPM range.

Its really bad when the engines under load towing my boat and can sound like an automatic rifle constantly firing under the bonnet.

Anyhow, Toyota dealer had a look at it yesterday and told me it was perfectly normal and the engine analyser didnt pick up anything wrong.... surely this cant be normal? I've driven quite a few late model diesels over the last few years (PX Ranger, Hyundai Iload,Navara STX) and never experienced rattle like this. I can't imagine anyone driving a new Prado or Fortuner with the same 2.8 engine would tolerate this?

I owned a PX Ranger before the Hilux and it would occasionally make the same rattle sound for a few seconds and only under heavy throttle when the accelarator was floored!

I would appreciate your comments!

I have a 2016 2.8 Auto
Engine is very noisy
One of my work mates is now running flash lube in his and it's so quiet compared to mine
Apparently it lubricates the injectors which is the main cause of the noise
I'm going to try some in mine today
and it's on sale at Auto barn

Mine's a manual 2.8, it sometimes has this noise between 1400-1800rpm when the engine's loaded up under partial throttle. Usually in 3rd or 4th.

Other than that it's incredibly quiet.

I figured I'd add my 2c to your thread as in my case the noise is roughly 1000rpm lower than yours.

Got 10000km on mine. Quiet as a mouse. I wouldn't be too concerned though. It is a diesel remember...it does everything a normal diesel does. If you are adement that there is something wrong, ask Toyota to give you a readout of feedback values of the injectors.

I had the exact rattle at the exact rpm that you describe. It started one day after the ute had done approx 6000km. Before that it was all quiet. I have the auto and when traveling along on cruise and come to a hill, engine under load, auto kick down, it would sound like a tappett rattle. I was going to show the dealer at first service but as quickly as it started it stopped. Done 17000km now and rattle has not come back.
Good luck getting it sorted as it was very annoying.
Cheers

Hi an update on the problem I was having with injector rattle

I took it back to my dealer and after a quick test drive with me they agreed the rattle was not normal and they ended up replacing all four injectors under warranty. It seems much quiter now, still a little bit of rattle always there but maybe thats just a hallmark of the toyota diesels?

Excellent service from my toyota dealer :D which is really appreciated after having spent the last four years wasting my time trying to get my local ford dealer to fix (always unsuccesfully) the ongoing flat battery problems I had with my previous PX ranger ute.

1400km on mine and sounds like a rattle from right hand side of dash, only just started. It's an auto and the rattle starts at 1800rpm and disappears at 2100rpm. Does anyone have anything like this?
Am going to get Toyota to check it out.

Sure do, mine has been at the dealer for the last week, this is the third time its gone back, I am meeting the Tech guru they have sent done from Sydney this afternoon to see if he can make sense of it, they have already had the tailshaft and driveshaft out as well as change over tires, to me it seems to be a Harmonics problem, they are also telling me that water has got in my fuel and my injectors, rail and diesel pump need to be replaced, due to ongoing noisey injector rattle, I have been filling up at exactly the same fuel stations as my last 4 Hiluxes with not the slightest problem in the past, are these new motors too highly strung ??
I'll let you know the outcome after today.

RAZ67, any updates from your end on what Toyota did? Mine was initially noisy in the mornings when cold and hard acceleration - wasn't too concerned, but now after 20,000 it's come good - as quiet as.

LOL, when they cant find the problem, they will always wheel out the water in fuel case. You might want to get a fuel sample out of your tank before they try to give you the bill.

Sydney tech guy was held up today, so deferred till 3 pm tomorrow, funny thing is I took it for injector noise 1 1/2 months ago, they took out the diesel filter and found quite a bit of metal filings in the bottom, they said they had found this before on other new Hiluxes, they then did a pilot relearn on the injectors and most of the noise went away, so for good measure they fitted a Water Watch at a cost of $844, so I thought all good, that's until the noise came back 2-3 weeks later, now they say damage happened before It was fitted, go figure.

So what is the service centre suggesting the next step?
Metal filings? Then these were caught up at the filter so there's no damage at the injectors?

Whats a pilot relearn? looked like that fixed the problem?

I have seen these filings in the filter housing of at least 4 different hiluxes, they look to be brass, haven't really bothered trying to work out where they come from but unless the fuel cooler is brass they would nearly have to be from the pump

There seems to be a problem with the software. The control of fuel to the DPF is starving the fuel system of fuel. This is leading to the injector problem that you are now seeing. It's a big problem.
Such a well designed engine from a engineering point of view, but this.
Of cause, I am talking about the 1GD-FTV. There will have to be a fix for this problem, otherwise the Denso dealerships will make a fortune.
Bloody Euro everything. It's good that companies like Isuzu don't care about the European market.
Like with the 1KD issues, it's not the water in the fuel thing. Just remember about the small claim thing and your legal rights. In Australia we have some of the best consumer laws, out there.
Toyota Engineers, time to go to work and find a fix, as you do. No blame game, except on yourselves. Also remember, in Australia, the Hilux is one of the most expensive utes out in the Australian market, so no blaming it on the fuel here. Most of these vehicles haven't even done 15,000kms yet, so stop it, Toyota Australia, with your bullshit and come clean. I will give you a warning this time round. Photos will go up all around the net, Facebook and everything. Just do the right thing towards your customer base this time round and everything will be fine.

Ok I had the DPF burn come on and off almost randomly for about 25km last night - this is probably the longest time I've had DPF ever. The cars just done just under 21000 km.

I was doing a combination of hwy and city driving and it was coming off and on & I couldn't work out a pattern that would trigger a DPF burn, but for the last 2km going home on straight road doing 60km/h - the injectors sounded noisier than normal. it was noisier this morning too but it was cold. I'll keep checking over the weekend - but it's unlikely to do a DPF again till maybe end of the next week.

Apart from that all is good, fuel consumption - best indication I know of any emerging problems - is good because of the DPF has gone up a notch to 7.8L/100km from 7.7L/100km.

So, the Sydney tech did show on Thurs he also brought along a Japanese Toyota engineer that apparently writes the software for the motor, they performed a test on the motor via computer and all is good and within their guidelines, they did another injector relearn, and I would have to say it doesn't sound too bad ??, still a bit louder than I am happy with, so as for the Toyota dealer telling me a few days earlier the injectors, rail and fuel pump all need to be replaced is a real concern, but its the Vibration that I am really concerned about, under load a vibration starts and makes parts of the dash hum and rattle, I can also feel it through the drivers seat and especially pushing my left foot against the transmission tunnel, the tech says its within the the normal range as compared the other new Hiluxes, which is absolutely bullshit in my opinion, this is my 5th Hilux and 4 of them have been Turbo diesels with no such problems before, I feel gutted that they say they can't find a fix, they did say they will look into further, so I am asking if anyone out there has a vibration problem similar, let me know, I am not giving up on this, as a long term Toyota owner I expect a great reliable vehicle without vibrations through the driveline, its only done 13,000kms
