2016 SR5 high Idle DPF?

Postby awwricecracker on Sun, 03 Apr 2016 4:26 +0000

I picked up my new hilux 4 weeks ago. I live 400km from the nearest dealer. On the way home, with 250km on the clock when I pulled into a roadhouse I noticed the hilux was idling quite high. I checked the idle up switch, definitely not on, stopped the engine and there was a bit of a flutter from the turbo as it was obviously under load. Called the dealer, they said it is just a new car it will do funny things. The next 1000kms it kept on doing it intermittently, generally as soon as you release the clutch in gear, the engine idles down but sometimes stayed idling high. Very frustrating as I tow a tradesman trailer and have to ride the clutch much more aggressively than i would like given the motor is racing.

Fast forward to 1400km on the odo after dropping it back to the dealer and they tell me they fixed the high idle, it was due to the DPF being blocked 90%.

I then get to 2400kms and it's got the same symptoms again, it's going back on Monday but will have another 500km on it to get it to them. I live in the kimberleys and I work the hilux reasonably hard and not for short drives. It started doing this again when I pulled up home in the driveway after pulling the tradey trailer 130kms at 100-110kmh.

Anyone else having any issues like this?

Thats supposed to be standard with the DPF operation.....the vehcile will intermittanly raise its idle to "burn off" the carbon collected, as required.

I find it concerning that the DPF was blocked 90%......could that be attributed to lower quality diesel fuel being used? dont know......

its required fitment to comply with Euro 5 emissions requirements......thou some are working to remove it, which would help, but if you get caught by EPA, you'll get hammered.

I think they've just told you it was 90% blocked, so you are under the impression they found an issue and resolved it. Pffft. This is normal operation. Nothing you can do about it. It's not a major inconvenience. Despite the extra 300-500rpm at idle...I don't think you would really need to ride the clutch any more than necessary. I've towed heavy loads and it's never effected anything.

I hope for you guys sake the system is better than my wifes craptiva! When its doin a dfp burn you can literally see the fuel guage goin down. To me the whole thing seems like a load of BS! You have this filter that is stopping the soot from going out the exhaust then when it gets a little blocked the computer pumps more fuel into the engine to get the temps up to burn it out. Where does it end up at the end of the burn? Out the bloody exhaust! Not to mention pushing the extra fuel into the engine will only create more soot anyway so it probably put more in than it burns! Sounds like BS to me!

I have my suspicions you're right about them telling me it was 90% blocked to prove they found something. I'm not 100% convinced it is the DPF though. All I get is the high idle coming in and out, nothing on the dash to let me know what's going on. The inconvenience for me is that it keeps changing between high idle and normal. It's super frustrating in low range when clutching. This isn't an infrequent thing, it's almost every time I drop to idle, even after 100's of kms of highway driving. Sometimes it feels really sluggish too.

I can't rule out the quality of diesel, it probably is rubbish up here for these hi-tech motors

You sound like you get the high idle occasionally too, do you get any info on the dash about it?

im with ya on that one, I have a VW crafter 4.5t van that I deleted the DPF on. Once this was done it had a butt load more power, smoked less and fuel economy got better too.

I can see how it might be an issue if you are in low range....didnt read that part. It should be building enough temp at highway driving and towing to burn off while travelling. I don't really get too many burn offs...but when I do it's only for like 5-10min. Maybe once a fortnight. About 600km of city driving. I have no light or any indication as to when it is burning off...which I find strange. Only the high idle occasionally. I now have 9000km on mine and it seems to be doing it less.

The thing with a DPF is to give it the chance to regen fully and not to stop or switch off once its started because it will retry again soon as conditions are right and will continue to do so which will eventually block the filter if it cannot.

Thanks everyone for your responses... Glad to hear it doesn't show on someone else's dash. I left it running yesterday for 40 minutes and it was still idling high. This is in 41deg heat, surely it should have regenerated by then.. Anyway, I'm heading back to Thr Broome dealer tomorrow, I'll update with their response

So the outcome was not really a surprise. Toyota found the DPF to be 90% blocked again, they did a regenerate and couldn't find it lacking any power.
They did say the regeneration process has 3 levels of urgency. The first being what I am experiencing. The next being the dash letting you know that it needs to re-generate, the last being limp mode. Apparently the solution is to drive 65kmh for 20-30mins.
As I live in a small country town, my driving is either a couple of minutes putting around, working reasonably hard offroad in river sand or highway driving at 110 - most of the time with a tradesman trailer. I think it could be that with such low gearing on the 6sp MT and that I have larger tyres, it is not revving enough on the highway.
It is around 1600rpm at 110 and only reaches 2000rpm at 140kmh, crazy.

If revs are an issue, you might need to gear down in order to process the DPF burn?

Yea try not to use overdrive gears for towing, that being 5th and 6th otherwise you'll prematurely wear bearing, gears etc..this goes for all cars.

Never mind, there will be an aftermarket solution to the dpf soon enough.

The DPF will not regen on tickover or need high revs just a 5-10 mile uninterrupted drive at normal speeds :D

These newer ones can regen at idle dervdave...they pick the revs up to 1200-1300rpm when sitting idle.

I`m surprised to hear that mate, I`ve always understood that because of the emission dispersal and fire risk involved no DPF will regen on idle.
Mine will idle up to 1k during the DPF process but only to help continue the regen when underway again.

Ah ok..even the Detroit and Cummins dpfs at work have stand still burn offs. There are warnings plastered everywhere for fire risk etc.

the mazda DFP has an extra injector in the exhaust that super heats the exhaust system and burns it off, doesn't affect idle speed, but you can tell because the i-stop is disabled and there's a deeper hollow exhaust note when it's doing it.

Do the hiluxes do it that way?

got the hilux back home 400kms later, start it up next morning - high idle again. It wouldn't be so bad if it had something simple on the dash just let you know what it was doing, but for me, there is no way of knowing. I live in a small country town, I'm either doing 110 on the highway or plodding around in town. There is no need to ever stop/start, the closest roadhouse is 220kms away so I don't realise it is doing it until I pull in.

I know it's not a big issue at the moment, I am just worried about the threat of limp mode, that would be crippling for me given I could be 200kms from any traffic or reception at the time. I do carry an epirb, towing costs $4.50/km up here, trying to avoid that

DPF filters the world-over are problematic and require a lot of ongoing care.

it's a travesty.
