Shorted out Trailer - Fuse or Trailer Lamp ECU??

Shorted out Trailer - Fuse or Trailer Lamp ECU??

Postby MickA70 on Sun, 19 Aug 2018 9:15 +0000

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone might be able to answer.
I have a 2016 Hilux Workmate that I use for my business, which I tow a trailer. My wiring was exposed on the trailer and it looks like it has shorted out. Nothing electrical works on the trailer now. Everything works on the ute, all my lights, indicators etc., just nothing on the trailer. I hooked up the trailer to another ute and checked if the trailer was damaged, and its not. All electrical worked on the trailer then.

So, my questions are:

1. Is there a fuse specific to the trailer?
I have looked over diagrams of the fuses, pulled all that were ECU fuses and couldn't find any blown.

2. Have I damaged the trailer Lamp ECU and need to replace that, or does that ECU have a fuse built in?
The Trailer Lamp ECU is a SST4KW-TOY.

I would really appreciate any help regarding this as I am an electrical noob!
Thanks in advance for your time.

Regards
Michael

Toyota has a habit of unmarking the trailer fuse. Check the fuse box for an unmarked 10A fuse (Red)

So it might be a fuse and not the ECU.

Not sure if the work mate is the same as an SR5 but just above the main fuse relay box is an accessory fuse box. In there is a 30 amp fuse for the towbar.

Most likely the feed fuse up front as already mentioned. My SR 4x4 sources from a seperate accessory fuse box but the Toyota wiring diagram also mentions an alternative option of an " Inline fuse holder on harness" so could also be a possibility for you. If this was the case you would need to trace the cable forwards from the ECU.

Not likely relevant here but if you ever lost a single light make a note that at least on SR/SR5 4x4 the rear trailer ECU also has 5 x 2A inline fuses scattered around the harness hidden between the rear chassis and body protecting each of the individual feeds to it from L&R Indicators, tail, stop & reverse.

PROBLEM SOLVED:
I visited my local Toyota Dealer and they sorted it in a few minutes. The fuse for my ute is located just off the positive terminal in a clip box. This dealer originally fitted my genuine Toyota Tray when I bought it, and they told me that different dealers position the fuse in different locations.

Thanks for all that helped me with suggestions, and hopefully this thread might help someone else in the future.
