2018 SR5 Dual Cab - Reverse Camera On Demand

Most wont be interested in this though figured id share it anyway - Use of reverse camera on demand.

So reasonably simple enough though a minor item to get it right. The reverse camera is switched by an active wire switched presumably from gearbox input and via ECU. Looking at the AV input you simply need to switch an active on the same input feed which works.

CATCH!
Doing so does back feed the circuit and power the beep & reverse lights which personally I didn't desire, especially if say driving down the freeway etc and people see the revers lights come on. So an easy fix, cut the input feed, solder in a diode to prevent the back feed of power and connect the new active switch wire upstream of diode.

OUTCOME
Flick a switch on demand at any speed and dash shows reverse camera image, no beep or reverse lights.

Thanks mate. Finding anything to do with video in the head unit handy at the moment. I have poor visibility out the rear so this is good. Next project is VGA in whilst moving - legit off road use only btw.

This is what i thought he was suggesting though why VGA & not RCA or HDMI?
You can very easily convert the 3.5mm Aux video input to RCA and say plug in a DVD player. The 3.5mm is simply Video, Audio L&R & Ground. It & the USB are wired to the same grey plug in on the deck which Is on the bottom row, 3rd from the left. From memory I think it's a 5wire plug and shares the same audio & ground wires. I expect a signal on the video switches the deck to aux video. So you could easily splice into these and mount an rca set of plugs in say your glove box or run to elsewhere such as behind the rear seat or under front seat.

Unless missing something, I think finding an rca dvd would be hard enough, not sure a use for vga.

This would be great for caravaners who could switch in the caravan camera whilst in use. I have a Safety Dave camera on my Lunagazer and need to look into this. More info would be great

Cheers :D :D :D :D

Yeah sorry mate. Meant to say RCA, not VGA. I have a simple video feed from a thermal camera that I use to hunt critters to take care of...

Guys,
Dont mind me I'm simple. I cant for the life of me work out how to get pdf or pictures on here. I have the schematics plus pics of pulling the unit out, modifying for:
Reverse Camera Switch.
Hand Brake Speed Removal (use when driving).

I can identify the plug & pins for AUX Vid (2nd RCA Input).

Mate for $90.
For probably $30 & 20mins you can do it yourself, it seriously is so simple.

Yep trouble is when the radio shits its self and toyota see you have cut wires they will wipe you for warranty.
This way i can just remove it.

Mate
If that's your concern. Cant see how they can, on that arguement adding spotlights could also be the reason for failure. You're doing exactly what the current design does & feeding 12v active simply via a switch.

As for the speedo feed you're simply pulling the signal & terminating.
Hand brake you're simply terminating the harness end and grounding the head unit, just as the handbrake does.

Yep great idea from carbon car systems just put one in, is a quality product easy installation about 30 minutes to install works like a bird. :D :D Cheers.

Although having it light up the led when reversing caught me by surprise when I first clocked it. The unit works fine though and is useful when desirous of checking the trailer when towing.

Next for me will be the rear diff lock on demand.

Guys if you can pull your unit out to install the carboncar system you can do it yourself, once at that step, it is literally a minutes work.

Once out its literally 1m of pair cable from switch to unit.
Solder both ends to each pin on switch.

Head Unit End.
1. Cut reverse feed wire.
2. Solder diode inline, feeding to unit.
3. Solder one wire from switch to diode/ head unit feed (head unit side of diode).
4. Solder other wire to head unit accessories power.

You're literally just adding a switched power feed to reverse input, that's what switches camera on. The diode just prevents beep & reverse lights from back feeding. Once head units out & warm soldering iron its literally minutes work & max $30 inc switch.
