Retrofitting cruise control

Retrofitting cruise control

Anyone retorfitted cruise control? Mines a 2016/17 Extra cab and there was no option when ordering. I believe a lot of Toyotas are pre wired for cruise control and so its a simple job of installing the stalk and plugging it in.

I've got hold of the cruise control stalk for a manual Hilux and the little wiring loom plus the steering wheel cover. In theory it should plug in and thats it but I've also got hold of some info from a Toyota dealer in South Africa about adding the 2 extra wires if it isn't pre wired.

Part numbers:

T84632-34011 cruise stalk
90459-50199 2x screws
T45186-0K140-CO cover
T84633-48020 wiring loom

Non pre wired will need wires:
SUJ82D0001 x3 (if not valid order 8299824290 x2 and 8299812870 x1)

This is the instruction video from the States for fitting cruise to a Tacoma

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjoTus5q5p0&index=2&t=0s&list=FLPkd7SUJLoLISqRHA_0x95Q

and this is the additional wiring if its not a pre wired vehicle

"A terminal need to be added with a wire terminal 26 on ecu top plug as per diagram that connects to a terminal on spiral cable terminal 1 , where terminal 2 is added for an earth.

Part numbers to be ordered : 9015950199 x2, 8463348020 x1 , 8463234011 x1, 451860k140c0 x1, suj82d0001 x3(if not valid order 8299824290 x2 and 8299812870 x1)"

Got a contact at Toyota technical looking up how to remove the airbag as I can't find anything online relating to our gen. Looking at it there is a hole on the bottom of the left spoke which either leads to a torx screw or a spring loaded tab and then there's the access panel on the right where the stalk will eventually come out.

My contact has come back to say the airbag is held on by a spring loaded clip on the bottom which is what the hole is for on the left spoke of the steering wheel, and once that is pressed the bottom of the airbag will be free. Then you push up to undo the top 2 clips. Obviously the battery needs to have the negative terminal removed and I like to leave the job for at least 15 minutes so any residual charge in the system has time to dissipate before messing about with airbags.

Did you complete the install of cruise control? I am also going forward with the cruise control install and have ordered the parts and all have arrived except the cover 451860k140c0 and three wires suj82d0001.

Do you have Gen8 specific instructions regarding the connection of the three wires from steering coupler to the ECM? One of the three wires is ground as shown in Rostra video link you posted above? The other two is for ECM coupler?

As i wait for the cover and three wires i thought I would go ahead and install the CC stalk and its small wire inside steering wheel; but can't seem to get the airbag off no matter what! Those darn clips! Wish it was screws like other toyotas.

@ dan@biali any updates regarding the install? I managed to get the airbag off by using a no.6 allen key (max size that goes into hole) to push on the airbag retaining pin through the hole. When pushed enough one side of the airbag pops out, now just wriggle it loose from the other side that is it. Airbag comes off.

Ok, so Spiral cable terminal 1 goes to terminal 26 on ECU top plug? Spiral cable terminal 2 goes to any grounding point?

Where does the third cable (of suj82d0001 x3) that we ordered goes?

I’ve not attempted the install yet. Was bit nervous messing about with the airbag!

Did you try connecting the stalk without doing any of the other wires? There’s a possibility it will work as lots of modern Toyotas are pre wired.

Yes, I installed the stalk but no joy. Mine is not prewired as I found out later when I opened up the steering column cover. Slots for pins 1 & 2 are empty. I checked the ECU behind passenger glove box and slot for pin 26 is also empty.

Is it possible for you to find out from the dealer if Pin1 (spiral cable connector) to Pin26 (ECU top connector) and Pin2(spiral cable connector) to ground is all that is needed for an automatic?

Disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for about 15 minutes before removing the airbag. Should be fine!

So it was simpler than I thought! Disconnected the negative terminal on the battery and left it for 15 mins, then using a T30 torx screwdriver I pushed the lower retaining clip up which is found through the hole on the bottom left of the steering wheel. Simply lift the airbag up to disengage the 2 upper clips. Then connected the stalk, screwed it in and made sure the airbag was properly reinstalled before reconnecting the negative. Switched the ignition on and pressed the stalk and my cruise light comes on which means mine was pre wired.

I've roadtested the Hilux now and the cruise works perfectly. I got lucky not needing the additional wires but maybe its a market thing - UK ones might all be pre wired.

Malaysian Hilux here. 2.8L Auto. Truck came pre-wired although cruise control wasn't even offered as an option in the new REVO until the most recent facelift. Tried calling the local dealer/service dept to see if they were pre-wired in Malaysia and didn't really get anywhere information wise. Decided to purchase the factory switch anyway from Thailand and try the install myself. Was a pretty straight forward task:

1. Remove neg battery terminal and wait 15min.
2. Remove side covers on side of steering wheel.
3. Move airbag - single clip on passenger side of wheel, used a flathead screwdriver to lever up. two other clips on either side of the wheel nearer to the top (think 11 and 1 o'clock position).
4. Attach switch to pre-existing mount and plug the harness fromt he switch into the receiver on the 12o'clock position on the wheel.
5. Cross fingers hoping that UMW Toyota ordered pre-wired trucks.
6. Reinstall everything and attach back the neg battery terminal.
7. Road test.

Boy am I glad I got the easy version of this job.

Thanks to everyone who posted pictures (unlike myself) and linked to YouTube tutorials.

I went with an Autostrada unit after reading all the positive reviews. I was a little confused with the minimal instructions, but their technician responded quickly to my email, and phoned me to talk me through it.
After dismantling the steering column to get to the wiring, I discovered that a lot of the wiring was already installed. I could've most likely just bought a switch and connected it all up as some others seem to have done.
That said, the Autostrada unit works perfectly.
I had an issue when exceeding the "Set" speed (say 90kph) and feathered the throttle when travelling at, say, 100kph. The control unit began ticking/clicking.
I contacted Autostrada again. They responded immediately saying that the clicking is the sound of the relay unit/s in the control box and is a normal peculiarity of the unit.
Although I've only used the cruise control a few times so far, I can highly recommend Autostrada.

For the IMV platform vehicles Hilux/Fortuner/Innova with 2.8 and 2.4 diesels adding cruise control is very easy using toyota components. Either the vehicle came with all wiring minus the control stalk or you need to add two wires. One to the ground and one to Pin 26 of the top most connector block in ECU as mentioned in this thread above by dan@biali

https://youtu.be/m6jfddOPaN0

Installing paddle shifters (if you have the automatic) is also very easy. Just need the paddles from fortuner alongwith it's steering back cover. Let me know if anyone is interested i will put up a video.

Hi

I just started reading up on this. I fitted the cruise control and it seems it is not prewired 2016 hilux. Does anyone have a picture of the ecu and which plug it is. When i Took out glove box it seems the first plug has wire 26 in the plug. Also why are there 3 wires when only 2 are used in the tutorial. I really want to get this to work. Thanks

Mine is a 2019 Hilux SRV out of Thailand GUN126R. I bought the switch, wire, two screws and plastic cap with hole all for USD 75. Plugged it in and now I have cruise control. It was pre-wired. Not even the dealer knew. Match your model number with the stalks compatibility list. I got:
Wire, Cruise Control Switch, Toyota
84633-48020
Switch Assy, Cruise Control Main, Toyota
84632-34011
SCREW, Toyota
90159-50199

I'm from the Philippines and all the Hilux here don't offer cruise control as an option. But my 4x4 2.8 diesel came pre-wired. I got my stalk imported from Thailand. I installed it DIY. The guy who imports it says that 4x2 models need to have an extra wire installed.

Dan,

thanks for your reply, I picked up the email notification but just getting a chance to get back on here,

I managed to get a switch from a corrolla/avensis from the scrap yard, the cable and steering wheel flange/blank was different but I noticed amazon had some identical switches on prime with the correct looking cable so I took a punt and got lucky! I still need to get onto toyota for the proper blank but I currently have a genuine toyota switch and working CC for £30 and about 20mins work (including the battery disconnect time!)

I'm eyeing up a few of your other mods Dan so you'll no doubt see me pop up again!

thanks John

Thanks for all the info.
So i fitted the CC switch and the wires on my 2016 Hilux, a very basic 5 speed manual transmission Thai version.
No light coming on my dash, ( maybe because it is so basic ? ).
And no cruise working.
Should it work when I do not have a clutch switch for the cruise control ?
Near the top of the clutch pedal is a connector taped to the wiring loom, with space for 2 rows of 11 wires, and fitted with an end cap which works as a jumper for all present wire pins.
Should this connector be used for the clutch switch ? If so, does anybody know the number of the switch that I will need ?
Or do I need clutch switch 8828014030 , which only uses two wires ?
If I need that switch, where do I connect the wires to ?
Thanks,
Hans.
