random flat batt

Postby Rockracing on Tue, 05 Dec 2017 10:58 +0000

Hi all we have a new model lux that at random times has dead start I have to go jump it then it’s fine. There’s no specific thing driver does to cause it and doesn’t happen same time day etc Toyota checks are all ok they say but has happened 10 times in last few months. Any idea guys? Tia

Think he means use a multi meter to do something like this: https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/m.wikih ... in%3famp=1
Or this: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-b ... -overnight

If your lead acid has gone flat several times it’s most likely damaged too. Once you find the problem, make sure they replace the battery too.

I had the same issue - its caused by a combination of factors
1 - absurdly low charge voltages from the "smart" alternator, which does not allow enough bulk charge time
2 - the battery is a bit too small for the job to begin with , being only 500CCA
3 - the battery was probably weak before the car was delivered
4 - short run times , as you have mentioned
5 - some residual current drain from the ECU and factory alarm system , about 30ma or so , which adds up over time

and of course Toyota would find nothing wrong each time , its thier standard response!!

only way to fix it is to replace the battery with new , then leave a small solar panel on the dashboard trickle charging the battery while parked. worked for me

Thanks for the info buddy yeah it’s a pain and it’s random would do the exachty drive etc days and days then one time stuff up. Might just change the battery to start with or I’ll get boss to ring dealer and state we won’t buy Hilux again worked before lol ( we have about 20 all up)

the problem with the factory battery is that it may have sat around for 9 months before the car was sold , therefore its down on capacity to begin with. the car may have needed a jump start off the ship and maybe a couple more at the dealers yard.
mine went back to Toyota and 3 times they said it was fine. out of desparation i went to Battery World for a second opinion and he tested the battery at only 360CCA , so was buggered really.

and people wonder why dealers cannot be trusted

This and the fact the stock battery wasn’t recommended for running a warn winch, lead to me changing the battery over the day I picked it up.

There is also an issue with the battery terminals that is tied to Bulletin - TNF 35/17.
My Fortuner would not lock up the Torque Converor in 6th under 110kph and this was the fault.
When i connected the winch, i noticed that they have a piss poor connection and if you dont push them right down the post, the negative terminal doesnt tighten enough.
Maybe this is something to look at.

I can't tell from the original post but is the battery actually flat / low voltage when it won't start ?

If not, then it's likely to be an electrical connection issue such as a battery terminal that is jolted when driving occasionally or a dodgy starter motor connection.

Thank you all for input. I’m thinking connections or starter but will get battery load tested then hit up Toyota

in my case it was the battery , resting voltage was low from memory. the solar panel has seemed to fix the issue by bringing the battery back to life., i can leave the car unstarted for 2 weeks and it now starts ok.
Previously it was going flat after about 6 days
