Radar/Adaptive Cruise Control

Radar/Adaptive Cruise Control

Postby ChrisD on Wed, 26 Apr 2017 7:52 +0000

So. Bought myself a Subaru Levorg STI Spec with Subaru's iSight which has an adaptive Cruise Control (vehicle slows and re-accelerates as vehicle in front does).

And now I need it for the Hilux

No seriously, I have a 2017 SR5 on order for delivery in the next couple weeks, and it doesn't have it which is a shame as it makes highway driving so much nicer (do a lot of single lane highway driving). After a bit of research I see Toyota has a radar based unit they put in the prado Kakado model, but my question is, has anyone ever put it into the Hilux? My understanding is that it works off a sensor that goes into the Toyota Badge on the grill so I wouldn't have worry about bull bars (might have to consider where lights go). I'm sure the control module would be stand-alone from the CPU with some integration into throttle and braking systems, all of which is fairly do-able with a harness manual.

Any pioneers?

It is great in the Kakadu, only trouble is when I get back into the Lux after doing a trip in the Kakadu, you soon learn that you dont have radar when on cruise behind first vehicle.
I wished it was on all vehicles.

Hey,
Ive got it on my Lexus IS250 and it drives me crazy. Works good but takes some getting used to. I often wonder why im not catching the car infront and have to override it to catch and over take the slower car infront. :D.

Yeah, got used to that on the Subaru - but it has settings for how far you follow. Does your lexus/toyota one have that?

The Kakadu does, 3 settings. If I have caught a vehicle I just use the foot to overtake when safe, then back on radar with out disconnecting cruise. Works well

But the question remains :) , can it be retro fitted to a Hilux? I would be a starter if it could be.

Ring a Toyota dealership in Europe and ask if you order a lesser model equivalent to our SR for example, can that cruise system be fitted, it could be as simple as another module and sensor and a software tweek.

If they say no then it may not be possible.
