ODB2 & guage Lovers - check this

Postby Qwerty on Thu, 23 Feb 2017 10:26 +0000

Hey Guys, thought I'd share this up.

This started because I wanted to monitor my transmission temps on the 5spd A750 auto (there's actually two temp sensors in it).

Bought an OBD2 wireless dongle, and grabbed the iOS app called OBD Fusion ($15) to run on my dash mounted ipad mini 3g (which i use for offroad navigation and satellite imagery on big trips) ... which offers all the standard PID's for generic OBD, but also has additional model specific connection setup for each actual engine which opens up hundreds and hundreds of extra things, and connects into the "network A" bus of OBD, rather than the generic.

Only trouble was it didn't have the 3.0 or 4.0 listed for Hilux, but the guy who makes it is aware and is sorting that out (you'll see in my screenshots that 4 of the metrics are zero ... those four shuld light up once the developer releass next update).

The app did have the 4.0 engine listed, but for the FJ ... and it has a different ECU to the Hilux , so it still wouldn't connect.

Anyway, here's a couple of screenshots and a video of it in action, I think its pretty cool (the wife just thinks I'm a nerd, but hey she had every chance to run).

There are literally hundreds of different metrics you can analyse, chart.

There's few things I need to clean up, and some metrics give odd results (throttle position is a hard one, but I'm still using generic OBD2 ... waiting on the Network A access and should get some better access).

I will be keeping an eye on this mate. Nice work
What ob2 dongle are you using?

Some cheap thing from Kogan (can't find it on their site) .. but basically any ELM327 compliant i think.

Not sure, i am not full bottle.

I literally just saw one advertised , clicked the buy button ... tuned my ipad mini into it, installed the $15 Fusion app and started setting crap up.

Took a bit of pssing around and some help from guys on facebook to get the right PID codes and equation for the tranny temps ... although once the fusion app guy fixes his app, that won' tbe necessary as the app will have it built in (hopefully) ... along with unlocking hundreds of other "toyota only" metrics (hopefully all of the four that are zero'd in the screenshots ... plus more).

The developer was only given data for the 2.7 litre hilux, US market doesn't seem aware that the 3.0 and 4.0 exist.

As i said to the App developer, get that sorted quick smart... there's millions of hiluxes with 3.0 and 4.0 engines here.

Good find.

Can you post the PID for the tranny temps? I wanna see if it works on Torque.

it does mate, infact it was a torque app setting i got it from.

Btw this is for the A750 5spd auto from the 1GREFE V6 hilux

only difference is, torque puts the OBD mode and PID as one integer, whereas OBD Fusion has them as seperate items.

In my app it would be OBD Mode : 21 .... PID : d9, but in torque its just 21d9

Unit Type : degC

Transmisison temp 1 (Pan Temp)
OBD/PID: 21d9
Module / header : Leave blank or auto
Equation : (((E*256)+F)/256)-40

Transmission temp 2 (Torque converter fluid temp)
OBD/PID : 21d9
Module / header : Leave blank or Auto
Equation : (((G*256)+H)/256)-40

Keen to know what sort of readings you get?

Just driving around last night I was seeing 93 for the AT (pan), and nearly 100c for the AT TC fluid

Not entierly sure what the normal operating temp is ... but if its getting those temps around suburbs at night, i shudder to think what it's getting on a 43c day when I am slopping through a boggy steep beach for hours on end :o

Will let you know but yours sounds a bit high. From what ive read around 80c is the operating temp when driving normally. The dash warning light comes on around 120c, which is the point the fluid turns to crap.

Hopefully someone with an external temp gauge can confirm...

Maybe the equation is wrong?

I was just thinking that about the equation .. .though its the same one the guys at prado point are using. I don't know how to decipher the equation, but i do believe it is originally farenheit.

Mine hovers around 80c high way cruising, but lsat night i was doing a TON of stop start driving when i took the video .. and I did read that stop start around town is actually very hard on the AT.

Surely not as hard as soft boggy sand work.

I do have a transcooler.

Plus, I've always done beach work in this car, and it has towed since it was born ... when I had the ATF fluid (Toyota WS oil) changed at 120,000 ... it was still crystal clean ... my mechanic was like "this is basically untouched fluid, this is why we don't even recommend changing it" (seems odd to me but i've heard it from more than one source). NASA must make the WS oil or something.

AT Temp (pan) was 90.2c at peak

The At Temp 2 was 96.38c ... that's the Torque Converter Fluid ... Maybe that's allowed to be a bit hotter?

I dont' know if i know what I'm talking about!

90c peak on the pan sensor sound about right. The TC sensor will always be hotter as thats where all the heat is generated.

I checked the fluid at 160,000kms and the colour was good and didnt smell burnt so i just did a pan flush. Definitely sticking with Toyota WS fluid. At 200k im gonna drop the pan, change the filter, torque the valve body bolts and do a complete flush.

yeah keep me posted what you see for both metrics eh, thanks mate.

I almost want to go tear up some sand tomorrow (40c day) and see what she does.

I've never had the light come on ... which to be honest is a testament to toyota, I'm talking beach runs in 45c temps with a tail wind, low range boggy nightmareish beach runs ... for an hour or more in one single hit never coming off the power.

Here's some PID's I use for my Fortuner, which should also work for the N80 Hilux.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/279 ... erPIDs.csv

If you're using Torque, you can import the CSV directly into the App.

Did some stress testing today , 41c, in sandy area, using the brake and throttle at same time and some standstill broggies as well (simulating typical beach driving as such) , 113c on the tc , and 100c on the tranny pan temp.

Bit high!! But I'm thinking brake + accelerator is pretty brutal on a system.

Maybe I don't have an oil cooler after all (it might be a heat condenser).
Or , the equation is off.

41c in sand is pretty tough conditions. Not much airflow either, the standard cooler is the bottom part of the radiator.

One way to check the accuracy of the equation is to check the temps in the morning when the car is dead cold. The ATF temp should just be above the ambient temp.

Havent had time to check mine today, its been pouring all day.
