I'm in the process of installing my TowPro and I've just spent some time sketching out the schematics to determine from where to take the brake light signal. The Redarc pre-made wiring harness has an additional core which goes all the way to the trailer plug, and I wanted to see if there was a simpler way.

The schematics are quite confusing and somewhat deceiving because 2 junction connectors are referenced (A45 and A46) and the way it is drawn is makes you think believe the brake pedal switch activates the brake lights, but i don't believe this is case. It seems the brake pedal switch only goes to the shift lock ECU for auto transmissions, and the actual brake light signal originates from the brake actuator assembly.

What this would mean is the manual override function on the TowPro will not operate the brake lights.

Could someone that has wired the signal to the brake pedal switch perform a manual override and let us know if the brake lights operate.

Thanks.

Tom.

you are right , the schematics are a bit confusing. A45 ( A46 ) is actually a common junction point , so the green wire from the brake light switch powers the lights directly , as well as provide a brake signal to the ABS ECU and the shift lock ECU.
If you look at the A45 , A46 connector layout on Page 2 you can see that multiple AND separate circuits co-exist within the same connector.

Although its a bit more work ( not much more ) , its better to run the single core wire all the way back to the trailer connector. Main reason is that doing it this way will not affect operation of the ABS or any other ECU in the event of an issue with the brake controller . rare but does happen. The trailer ECU is heavily protected against overload so nothing will kill it.

a guy at Cape York recently had an issue with his new Prado where the brake controller ( im not saying what brand ) had failed internally and stray voltage was being backfed to the cars brake system, so his brakes were dragging on. I found that the installer had gone direct to the green wire. I cut this off and the problem went away. I wasnt towing so sold him and fitted my controller to get him going again and he reimbursed me well :)

I think the redarc harness has a diode on the red/white that is then joined to the red in the harness.
I believe this is to stop feedback into the cars brake light system when the tow pro is operated manually.

Quick question, what size wire is everyone using to run from the unit to the rear of the car? Manual says 1.25mm2 and 3mm2, so was thinking of getting some tycab 5mm twin core snd just using that? Will end up being 6 plus metres by the time it reaches the rear of the car (from drivers side footwell, through passenger firewall grommet, down chassis etc...)so wasn't sure if a larger wire would be needed to allow for that?
Cheers

I use either 6mm gas or 6mm twin.

Cheers Toyz, I've got enough 6mm to get from the battery but will order more for the rest of the job

Gday all. Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm about to tackle install Tow Pro Elites on a 2020 model and a 2021 model. I've always run the wire from the trailer plug in the past and it sound like that's the safest option again here? The plug in the passenger kick panel does seem much easier and more convenient, but it sounds like it may not be fool proof?

Thanks

Redarc do a really good universal kit for the towpro now. Had all the wiring all pre terminated, also has a pre wired in diode for newer cars to prevent any feedback thru the brake system. Have done plenty with this kit now and is all I ever use.
