Redarc Towpro Elite into 2016 SR5

Postby JoeyO on Thu, 29 Dec 2016 9:10 +0000

Hey All,
I'm setting up electric brakes for my camper and have purchased the Towpro elite from Redarc.
I've set up electric brakes before but not the remote unit that sits in the dash.
Has anyone install one of these or similar and where did you mount both controller unit and the remote?
How do you pop out the empty plates for new accessories?
Any help of photos would be much appreciated.
Cheers

The controller for the towpro can be mounted anywhere solid, any direction, upside-down doesn't matter! When you first use it it calibrates itself, as long as its mounted soild it'll be fine. The remote can go in one of the blanks. I usually stick my hand up under the dash and push them from behind.

Im going to mount mine under the dash near your right shin, basically at the bottom of the A pillar, if you there are 2 threaded inserts already there that will fit the units mounting holes. As far as getting the blanking plates out, use a small flat blade screwdriver to lift out the entire group of blanking plates and the surround, it pops out easy, then just squeeze the lugs in the individual plate

Here's mine. You shouldn't need any tools to get the switch bank out. Just reach behind and push it forward. It's a little bit tricky getting the switch to fit in the blank. Lots of trimming is required but it does fit.

you can get a lot of them on ebay. Toyota have 2 different size switch holes , so get switches for the late model 200 series and they will fit.

Mine are the Newpro Tech versions. They are available from their website or as numberplate has suggested, Ebay. I have changed the LEDs in mine to match the factory colour better.

I put my tow pro knob in the centre switch blank, so passenger can hit the knob just incase tail wags the dog.

without pulling the factory loom apart where does the blue wire end up so I can join into it. also is it the pink wire from the brake pedal to hook into for the lights?

Under the driver's seat under carpet. Look for the loom where it enters from underneath. Lights? That would be in the loom. Is it dealer fitting? Or do you mean the brake sensor?

I always prefer to run the blue wire all the way to trailer plug. Brake light wire, grab ya test light and see which wire ate the back of the brake pedal is live when the pedal is pushed. Simple.

Redarc now have a plug & play kit for the towpro & the Hilux N80. Approx cost $280.
All wires fuses mounting plate & full instructions takes about 2 hours to install if you are handy.

Just curious as to what core/loom is under the driver's seat under carpet.

I was under the impression that the blue wire from any brake controller we install has to go to the trailer plug regardless because the blue wire would actually be part of the trailer wiring harness, which is an after market installation on our new Hiluxes, thus my doubt about anything being pre-wired in the car. However, i do see a connector on the end of the blue wire of the genuine Toyota trailer wiring harness (yet to installed) and the installation instructions make no mention of it being plugged in anywhere, so i'd be happy if i was directed to any wiring already run into the car.

Cheers.

No the blue wire i alluded to is in the towing loom/harness and terminates under the floor under the driver's seat, so you can run the blue from the controller to that because as you noted it is connected to the socket which is on the towbar.

No, the blue wire does not go to the driver's seat in the current model. It terminates above the spare wheel under the tray.

OK so now we know, BTW I ran a heavy gauge wire from the controller to the socket to be sure, later found the other end of the blue under the seat but i had already run the heavy wire right to the socket ;)

Hey has anyone run the red wire to the brake lights on the car or the trailer plug ... does it matter ?????
Also I notice with the redarc wiring kit it has a red/white and a separate red wire that slices into the brake light wire. Does anyone know what the red/white wire does.

Pretty sure the wiring kit uses the brake signal in the trailer socket. It creates a loop, you remove the red brake wire from the trailer socket and connect it to the red white wire in the towpro harness. You then connect the red wire from in the towpro harness into the trailer socket brake pin. Hope thats clear enough. Ive used a couple of their wiring kits in a couple different makes and for the money they just aren't worth it!

Thanks heaps, made perfect sense. I might buy just some twin core off eBay and save the money.
