Hi Everyone,
I have been using this thread as a source on the best methods to install a UHF in my new hilux (2019 new spec). Thanks everyone for the great ideas. Hoping that I can help others out there, I wanted to share the method I used to attach the handset for my Icom IC-450 to the dash, without drilling any holes.
As you may know, there are not many flat surfaces on the dash of the new Hilux, making it tricky to get something to apply to the surface. I went looking for radiused mounting blocks online, but ultimately I remembered I had some spare 3M GoPro mounting sticker blocks from an old GoPro. GoPro include two straight and two curved blocks with the camera, however they can be purchased separately. The curved ones, used here, are flat on one side where the camera usually goes.
I then cut the tabs off to make the top surface flush, cleaned up with a razor blade and sand paper.
Attached to the GoPro mount, using strong Scotch brand double sided tape, is a plastic mic holder clip from Jaycar.
I then marked it roughly where it needs to go. To do this I put a torch behind one side and got it in the best location where there was the maximum amount of surface area sticking to the dash, but I didn't want it too low. It's lined up straighter than it looks in the photos.
Time will tell how it goes, but its holding very well so far. The GoPro 3M double sided tape is very high quality. Hope it helps anyone out there looking for a cheap and clean way of mounting their UHF mic. Cheers.
