2016 hilux UHF

I know an old thread and reviving it though have a 2018 model Hilux and just brought the latest GME 370. I've wired it up via a relay off the ignition & mounted the box behind the glove box & wired through to the console though having an SR5 I only have the one switch free and need it for my battery volt display being clear & visible location. So I've extended it through to the switch plate below the ignition switch. So now looking for ideas on where to mount the magnetic handset mount. Anyone else with a new model Hilux and GME 330 or 370, what have you done mount wise.

Was consider a custom bracket off the handle on the front windscreen pillar

Google “Minecorp UHF Bracket” I bought this bracket off them and repurposed it for a phone Mount and absolutely love it so easy and clear to read etc without dropping your eyes off the road. And it does not obstruct your view as the only thing behind it is the pillar.

So I looked at the option & thought I could probably make a simple yet solid enough bracket & that's what I did.
Nothing fancy, used 32x6mm flat alloy bar, 1x fold, drilled a couple of holes & polished. Cost me the best part of $13 & about 600mm of bar left over. Simply double sided taped holder to bar & wella.ImageImage

Hi Everyone,

I have been using this thread as a source on the best methods to install a UHF in my new hilux (2019 new spec). Thanks everyone for the great ideas. Hoping that I can help others out there, I wanted to share the method I used to attach the handset for my Icom IC-450 to the dash, without drilling any holes.

As you may know, there are not many flat surfaces on the dash of the new Hilux, making it tricky to get something to apply to the surface. I went looking for radiused mounting blocks online, but ultimately I remembered I had some spare 3M GoPro mounting sticker blocks from an old GoPro. GoPro include two straight and two curved blocks with the camera, however they can be purchased separately. The curved ones, used here, are flat on one side where the camera usually goes.

I then cut the tabs off to make the top surface flush, cleaned up with a razor blade and sand paper.

Attached to the GoPro mount, using strong Scotch brand double sided tape, is a plastic mic holder clip from Jaycar.

I then marked it roughly where it needs to go. To do this I put a torch behind one side and got it in the best location where there was the maximum amount of surface area sticking to the dash, but I didn't want it too low. It's lined up straighter than it looks in the photos.

Time will tell how it goes, but its holding very well so far. The GoPro 3M double sided tape is very high quality. Hope it helps anyone out there looking for a cheap and clean way of mounting their UHF mic. Cheers.

The 3M tape isn't that strong, I'd recommend going to Bunnings & buy the Black Gorrila tape, usually in the paint section. It's a hell of a lot stronger & black so will blend in much better also.

I bought the 3M Scotch tape from Bunnings and compared to the Gorilla double sided. Per cm, Gorilla was only half as strong. If it falls off I will just try something else. The 3M stuff on the GoPro mounts is another level stronger again from experience. On my motorbike helmet the camera took some abuse from tree branches etc and never came off.

The 3M tape is black. Its just the removable backing that is red.

If anyone is interested in the genuine Toyota parts for wiring in the power to your radio, or other accessories, into the 12V lighter, see the Toyota guide linked below. Part number is UNIFK001 or TOUNIFK001. Available from Phil Gilbert online for $25.99. The connectors may not be the same for your radio model, but it still makes a nice clean install, IMO.

Gday all. Thanks for the thread. I've just ordered a Uniden UH5060 kit to install in my mother-in-laws 2019 hilux. I'm looking to do the under-console install as she wants it to be neat and minimal.

If anyone has any specific tips for installing this model, that'd be awesome. Otherwise I'll post if I run into issues.

thanks

A couple of pics of the install I did for my MIL. She has a 2019 SR auto. I installed a Uniden UH5060 value pack because it was minimal, decent value at $349 from Autobarn, and comes with everything you need including a 6.6dbi antenna (https://www.autobarn.com.au/me25251). The unit is mounted under the centre console, under the cup holders. I forgot to take a photo, sorry, but I'll try to next time I work on the vehicle. I ended up just cable tying the mounting bracket though some holes that I punched into the sound proof matting. I was happy with how secure it was and the matting will provide some cushioning.

The MIL is a bit particular about her car so she was happy that the aerial was black and matched her factory bull bar. I used one of the extra accessory terminals that Toyota included with the vehicle to wire the power feed via the existing fuse box near the battery. All the spots in that fuse box already have constant power from the battery which makes things that bit easier. She also didn't want me drilling holes into the dash for the mic hanger and didn't want the grab handle bracket either, so we settled on leaving the mic in the small compartment in the console.

The orange 5 amp fuse is the new one I installed. A good tip for getting the cables through the firewall easily is lots of talcum powder. You can see the remnants on the fuse box. Get some into the hole you cut in the grommet and wipe the cables with it.
