Rang local dealer spare parts yesterday and was advised that dual battery option is not available at present as Toyota is not happy with the quality of the set up.

Yep that does not surprise me that spot on the battery box where they mount the Redarc unit must cop a lot of heat they might get some sense & put it behind the front grill might add a lot of dollars to prices thou.
CHEERS.

Hi guys, just spent the last 2 days installing my projecta dual battery system. I like doing these sorts of jobs myself as I gain great enjoyment from it and I think I take the time and do a very good job. Just wondering will doing it myself void my manufacturers warranty should anything go wrong with the vehicle?? Appreciate your replies.

Only if your stuff up is shown to cause the failure. I wouldn't worry if you took your time and were confident that you knew what you were doing.

I wonder what they will say when they see I've shoehorned a 100AH battery into mine?

Doesn't surprise me. I'm no structural engineer, but i have always suspected that it would only be a matter of time before the metal on the wheel arch fatigues due to vibration, and from what i recall on the previous version Hilux, wheel arch cracking when using large heavy batteries was a known issue. On my previous Hilux i installed an ARB battery tray but only used an Optima D34 to limit the weight on the wheel arch. The D34 had smallish capacity, but it was enough top keep the fridge running overnight.

Given there doesn't seem to be any physical differences in LH wheel arch on the new Hilux (i.e. additional bracing or stiffeners), i will be putting a battery bank in the tray and running large cables to the front.

I am interested in seeing what revised battery tray setup Toyota will come up with though.

austeve wrote:Hey, looks good - just wondering how you got power to the rear? Is there a factory loom ready and waiting to carry power or did you have to run more cables?

I ran a 6mm twin to rear down past aux battery, along chassis rail to rear and up through cavity of left hand tail light. There is an opening into the tub from there.

Hi adamkberger ... I have a 2016 sr5 and am going to run power into the tub for a fridge etc you mentioned about there being a cavity near left hand tail light, do i have to drill a hole into the tub to route the wires or is there a hole or grommet? Cheers .. great pics an instal..

For those with wellbody trays, if you run your fingers under the lip near the front on either side, you will find a gap/hole which goes down to the front part of the rear wheel arch (hopefully that makes sense lol). You can run cables along the chassis rails and enter the tub this way. It's what i did on my previous Hilux and will be doing it again on the new one. You can fit some pretty sizeable cables down there too.

Hi all, is this recall issue only for Toyota installed dual battery systems. I had an ARB battery tray installed by an auto electrician. Just wondering who I would contact if I'm affected. Cheers.

chevaps,
Hi well just for what its worth I have been putting Aux Batteries into my Hiluxes for over 25 years I am not positive but one of the early hiluxes it may have been the old pre combustion chamber models either the 2.4 litre or the old 2.8 non turbo models, I always remove the battery trays when trade in time comes usually around the four year mark, only one time on one of these have I seen a crack in the wheel arch under where the battery tray was bolted on & the tray was NOT an ARB one cannot remember who made it, but it only had three or four mounting bolts going through the bottom & into the wheel arch NO side anchor points at all. still got it in the back of my shed somewhere do not know why I kept it as it is only junk.
When I bought my first 3 litre D4D in 2005 I bought an ARB tray it had three mounting points going through the bottom lugs & into the wheel arch something new, was a fourth mount moulding on the top side of the tray & mounting onto the side mudguard where the chassis earth is attached to the body, I thought what a great idea as it gives the tray a far better mount to the vehicle body.
I moved that tray onto three different vehicles no modification action needed NEVER seen any sign of cracking in the wheel arch.
Early 2016 got my present 2.8 D4D this time the tray needed some mods the brackets underneath all had to be moved over a little some mods to the rear to get the tray to fit & I was able to cut the top mount off the tray & extend it in goose neck form to reach the Chassis earth point behind the accessory fuse box ( thank goodness for mig welders.) it just clears the vehicle Id plate I really believe it is this top mount that helps save the wheel arch from cracking all my batteries over the years have been N70ZZ start batteries always get three to four years out of them even thou I work them hard flatten them but charging up straight away is a must do.
Cheers :)

So does the new 2015+ models have "smart" alternators controlled by the ECM or just temperature regulated? Looking to buy a charger and want to know if i should go the redarc "LV" model?

The lv just means it ignition triggered which you can do with the non lv model anyway.

Spoke to Redarc and the BCDC1225-LV and BCDC1225 are being replaced slowly with the BCDC1225D which has both features, hence the "D" for dual.

TOYZX, I'm putting in the ARB tray, and 2 things come to mind.

1) I don't need to drill any holes by the look of it, although ARB told me I would have to drill 2? There are no extra bolts/ nuts with the kit.

2) From your pictures above, it looks like you've bolted it to the side of the fender? If you have, what bolts did you use? (2 bolts middle right of the 1st picture)

As far as I can see from my kit, it bolts down to 4 points, basically in each corner of the tray?
Cheers
Fulle

To be honest I can't remember if you need to drill any holes, I don't think ya do. Ya kit should have come with bolts! No bolts in the side, just the two threaded rods that go through the top hold down plate. Maybe put a pic up of what you got and I can see what you may be missing.
