Electric brakes?

Electric brakes?

Postby Smokescreen on Sat, 21 Nov 2020 6:42 +0000

Hi gents,
I'm after some advice.
I have a late '15 Hilux and need to fit an electric brake controller. My caravan has the brakes wired through the 7 pin trailer plug on the aux terminals. The Hilux has the Toyota factory towing loom fitted, including wiring for the aux terminals. Where do I find the other end of the tow loom? Under the dash I assume? I have a Hayman-Reese brake controller, just need to connect it's output to the Toyota tow loom.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Cheers!

Sometimes the blue wire makes it to just next to the drivers seat.. but most likely it will be near the spare tyre.

Smokescreen, not sure if we're talking gen7 or gen 8 but two things come to mind here..... First the blue wire is under the driver seat almost right under your bum there's a wiring harness which comes up from the rear through the floor. If you lift the carpet you'll find it but first look under the car to see where it enters the floor.
Second, the genuine Toyota harness connects the reversing lights at the 7pin socket... This is also the wire to supply house aux input to the caravan. You need to cut the reverse lights connection which goes from the harness to the left hand tail lights on the car and splice in a power line to supply aux power to the van (that's of course if that's what you want)

Thanks Hiluxxury & Gipsy.
That's exactly what I was after. I obviously didn't look back far enough for the previous post.
I don't need the house aux connection, Anderson has that all sorted, but thanks for the heads-up. It all sounds like an easy job with the controller literally inches from the blue wire. A good job for next days off.
Cheers!

Smokescreen, the wire terminates at the floor so you will need to splice an extension to the brake controller.

Hiluxxury you were right. After squirreling around under the seat with no success I found the blue wire above the spare wheel. Why would they do that??

Yeah mine was there too (Gen7). I guess it depends on which apprentice installs the towbar.

  yes I guess so :D I ran my own heavier gauge figure 8 to supply brakes and house power then found the elusive blue under the seat... too late but I'm happy with the heavy gauge wire ;)

So, Hayman Reese Guardian brake controller installed as per the manufacturers instructions, using the green (cold) wire after the brake switch on the Hilux to fire the brake controller. But I have a problem. Without the van connected, when I apply the brakes I get an audible beep and dash alarm Brake Override Malfunction. When I disconnect the wire from the brake switch the problem goes away. I've searched the forum and the only results refer to a blown brake light fuse under the bonnet. My fuse is fine. Anyone come across this before? I'm wondering if the Hayman Reese Guardian is not compatible with the electronics built into the gen8 Hilux, possibly pulling more current than the system is comfortable with? Any thoughts?
