Turbo Upgrade for the 3.0L

Postby Banjo101 on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 2:48 +0000

Hey guys... I need an opinion and some help regarding turbo upgrades. Since the 3.0L are running on VNT, must we still use a VNT if we decide to upgrade?

My criteria is basically :-

- MORE POWER
- Semi Drag purpose
- 350hp? :D
- MORE POWER

- Car will be loaded with heavy duty bars as well as in future
- Towing about 3 Tons once in a while. Flat + Hill.

Any Advice?

I saw them in the 4wd action Custom guide last month with a turbo upgrade they installed not to sure of the power but didnt not have a electronic waste gate on it :P they clame 600nm at the wheels @15psi. They were using a garrett turbo

There is a bloke on Newtriton from the Philippines (I think) and he has his Triton producing over 400Hp. It is a weapon

350hp out of a 2998cc 4cyl diesel ???--- towing 3000 kgs... buy a v8 vdj79 dude.. its a boy doing a mans job..

on a side note-- tow over your rated spec and have an accident ! insurance company will wash their hands.

if you are towing that amount , check your towbar bolts every month to make sure the bloody thing isn't falling off

i dare say he has done a tad more than upgrade a turbo.
And honestly if there the figures your after i would be looking at doing a few more upgrades than just power.
ie: IMO the hilux pulls up rater slowly (expected for a car of its size) add a 3tonne trailer and doubling the power....... you get where im going.

Mates got a 2007 hilux 3.0ltr his upgraded
Bigger Garret turbo
Boost 18psi
3" exhaust
Front mount intercooler
K&N air filter
His also got a custom diesel pump
There could be more not sure!
His was pushing 198kw at the rear wheels.
But I suggest not to touch the engine at all
Because it's just problems after problems
Machanice shop to machanice shop.
Only way Id suggest is to forge te whole motor.
I recommend is just a 3" inch exhaust k&N filter and abit more boost with the original turbo.

That is a whole lot of power for a 3 litre diesel.
What sort of issues is he having?
People and engines like that are the ones to test parts, would be a good indicator as to where one would strengthen first (providing the people tuning know what they're doing)

Also, WTF is a machanice? ;)

yes, he used to be here as well once upon a time "MONSTER" his username was.....Phillip Massoud, ex Sydney guy now lving in phillipines....made some pretty wild power claims without backing them up, couple of the guys on this forum tried his products with nowhere near the success that he was claiming and to put it mildly.....he left this forum.

not saying he doesnt know what he is doing, Im sure he does and yes, you can swap the factory turbo for a garrett unit but you have tokeep one of the factory sensors off the variable vane turbo to ensure the elctronics side of things still works....

I wouldnt put more than a couple more pounds of boost into the factory engine personally if you can get it to wind up earlier/lower in the rev range that would be more benefit Id think.

im with mmaaxx here, bigger turbo and more max power doesnt always mean better. unless your planning on dropping it at some crazsy rpm to climb outta the bog.

Truth be told... I work on site with lots of hill climbs - onroad & offroad. The 3 Tons I pull will be my own Subaru for the drag races. Looking into DBA for brakes. Currently running on UNICHIP management system. With 32" tyres... I still get wheelspins off the tarmac. :D

Basically looking into whether or not should stick to a VNT turbo or opt for a ball bearing or something. Diesel not really my thing but since I drive it everyday... MORE POWER!!!!

Biggest question is, what $$$ do you want to spend

For ease of fitment, i'd ditch the twin turbos and go with an eaton style blower
