D4D Engine oil level dipstick

Postby axeten on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 11:57 +0000

Hey guys,
Searched up but couldnt find anything.

I was wondering if anyone had a fix for the useless oil dipstick on the D4D's? When you dip it in and pull it out there is no accurate oil level, it's different on both sides of the dipstick and smudges so you can see how full it is.

My father in law is a mechanic at a local refinery and says all their hilux's are the same and its just a design flaw.

Has anyone found a way to fix this by bending or modifying the dipstick pipe? I dont mind too much but it would be nice to actually get a decent reading from it.

Cheers
Alex

When I had mine I twisted the bottom 50 mm approx (just past where you read the level) 90 degrees worked fine after that.

Just checked mine and it is easy to see the level.( 07 D4D Dual Cab 75,000K)
The oil is black and its been sitting overnight, so I suppose that makes it a bit easier.
So, from my findings, let your oil stay black and don't drive it. Works for me.

Sorry, just couldn't let this one slip by.

I give mine a hit with some medium emery so now i pull it out wipe and then dip it back in for 3 seconds and pull it straight out. Seems to get an accurate reading now

Wasn't sure about this trick but wouldn't you know. No more having oil showing 3 inches higher on the bumpy side, and dry on the dimple side. It works exactly how a dip stick should work now. Twisted mine just shy of 90 degrees for fear of snapping it off. WTF wouldn't Toyota release them like this geeeez.
Thanks for the tip Macca you LEGEND!

willing to try this as reading was impossible... might even have overfilled.

So I'll get 2 pair of grippers out and make a 90-ish twist about 5 cm from the bottom of the stick (should be a bit above the . high/low dots) and retry.

anyone got the partnumber for a new dipstick?? in case I break it? :D :D

Thx for this fix Macca, right pain in the proverbial to read at present even when there is a few Ks travelled after an oil change.

Did this on the last oil change. 100% easier to read now.

Thanks for this post on the dipstick issue. I got sick of guessing the oil level so I thought I'd check up on it on New Hilux. I did the 90Deg. twist on the bottom 50mm and problem solved. Should have known New Hilux would have the answer. :)
