I don't have their reply anymore, but I'm pretty sure that Locked Drive Systems in NSW were under $1000 also. You could also try Harrops in Victoria - don't recall their price.

There may be others, but I agree with you that $1450 is ridiculous. That's the sort of price you could perhaps have expected years ago when the A$ was around 60c/70c

Has anyone here have firsthand experience with a detroit locker in a hilux ? I had one in a landrover wich is constant 4x4 and i almost didnt notice it was there. But our hilux's are part time 4x4... Mine is an auto tough so i think it would drive better onroad? Mine does not carry any load in the back so how would this behave in wet conditions ? Is a stock hilux heavy enough to provide enough grip at the wheels for them to unlock the locker on wet road?

I think the consensus was that if you were in heavy traffic daily you might be better off with a locker you can engage as required but if you were in a rural setting, the Detroit would be a winner. Given you have had one before and liked it, sounds like it will suit you well. Remember that the ARB and elockers give you an open diff as you loose the LSD so you are likely going to be engaging it in situations you did not need to before.

Also, the other benefit with a selective rear locker is if your running large tyres (i.e 35's), you wont stress out the rear diff/axles as much driving on the road as you would with an LSD or a detroit fitted.

So in a way, being a single spinner in high range actually helps protects the driveline a little.

Yeah i have 33" so it may stress the halfshafts a bit.
I have an autobox tough, from what ive heard they drive way better with detroits because there never really is a solid connection with the engine and gearbox, allowing slip between them, wich results in less bangs and jerks.

Another option i was considering was a truetrac. But i want to know that when it lifts a real wheel what happens if i pull the handbrake a bit to get it going somewhat ?

seen a detroit system on ebay for about $800 although it says its for a toyota cruiser 05-06 it is 8" with a 30 spline wondering would that fit?

ARB have a Christmas special on their lockers - $1195 including a pump up kit (which I am assuming lets you use the compressor for tyre inflation etc.)

Seems to be a fairly good price considering I got quoted $1525 earlier this year. Is that about as low as they go or is it a special they do regularly?

Yep, 1195 is as cheap as they get, I got mine on that deal, keep in mind the install is quite expensive. I got a rear locker and pump up kit and love it I did get the proper pump gauge attachment bit though, otherwise you have no idea what pressure you're taking your tyres to without taking the pump off and putting a gauge on.

Sorry for bringing back the dead. I've had my Detroit locker for 11 years now (in my SR 2wd DC 4L petrol) and put over 300,000kms on this diff. I drift my Hilux at least once a day... Ive had to replace my diff bearings twice and upgrade my wheel studs to ARP as they kept snapping. I have 315x35x20" rear tyres and launch it hard quite often. Yes yes I do really need to grow up
Anyhow I just wanted to show how reliable the Detroit locker is.
Definitely getting one for the TRD as well.

Chiming in here. I had a twin locked 79 Landcruiser, both were Eaton/Harrop (same thing) electronic lockers. This is the only thing I would put in my vehicle, they are super reliable, no air lines to rip out. Twin lockers cost $4000 but I never encountered any hill or mud that that thing did not just plough straight through. 4 wheels locked is unbeatable. One reason I went twin lock, was that I go 4wd'ing alone, so I never have the option of a tow. I also always have a winch with another 100ft extension Dynemma rope, cause sometimes there is not a tree for 50 meters+ from where you are bogged. For those who can afford it, get a satellite phone, monthly basic rate is $15 and if you're heading into the outback, you'd be crazy not to take one, and a personal locating beacon. Its not a lot of money for piece of mind.

FWIW my harrop blew up due to the axle rubbing on the diff inners. Its been noted elsewhere as well.

I fixed it by cutting down the axle length but 1mm... but only after pulling the diff out 3 times to figure out what the problem was. Front end worked fine.

But... I'll be getting something else next time. they also unlock about 2/3rds of a wheel rotation between going forward and reverse, and vice-versa... not something that helps when you are really stuck.
