Finally, Upgraded CV Joints/Driveshafts

Postby Hilux Max on Mon, 01 Jun 2009 1:41 +0000

Guys,

Ive done some investigating and have finally come across a mob that makes an upgraded CV/driveshaft for the FJ cruiser........

https://rcvperformance.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=47&osCsid=ae949032e8cb461586b38411e44108b9

RCV Performance has completely redesigned the inboard joint replacing the fragile factory set-up. The RCV Performance Ultimate FJ inboard joint allows for more articulation on lifted FJ's. The billet aerospace alloy center bar is heat treated for maximum strength and torsional flexing. The OEM outboard is beefed up with chromoly internals. All sales are done on an exchange basis. An OEM axle with a usable outboard joint must be sent in for this upgrade. The outboard joint itself is pretty stout and to keep the cost down it is rebuilt with upgrades internal components by one of our factory trained technicians. All RCV components guaranteed against breakage and 100% customer satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. **PRICE IS FOR ONE SIDE ONLY!**

Image

The price is $585 US per side, but they do have a guarantee against breakage so they must have some faith in their product. And yes, I do understand that by beefing up the driveshaft you putting extra stress on other components such as the diff centre itself......

The FJ driveshaft thou will not be a bolt in application for the hilux, as we found out in the drvietrain bible I beleive it was, the outer shaft has a different spline count due to the Prado/FJ Hub being slightly different but everything else is the same, so there no reason if you were serious about upgrading that they couldnt make a set for you to suit.....

Steep price...good product...you pay for what you get.....

The following is a review that the only FJ owner that is running them so far has said. By the way, he is running a 6" drop bracket lift and 305/70x17" muddies (i.e. 34" diamter tyre)-

I have been testing these CV Axles from RCV since the Easter run at Rausch Creek and they have performed flawlessly, from install to bouncing the front end to get up ledges to almost rolling the truck with 3 wheels off the ground (video is posted on FJnortheasters).
I had the wheel turned all the way one way on a 3.5 foot ledge and stomped on it to get up, No funny noises no weird feelings no loud snapping sound, no cv replacement on the trail.

I don't know when they will be ready for production but when they are I fully recommend (if you wheel your rig) getting them. There is this awesome state of mind knowing that a little skinny pedal isn't going to leave you on the side of a trail replacing your cv.
You guys with 6" lifts these are a must.

Sean Carlini is a great guy and RCV is a good company, Keep an eye out for these to hit production,

Just thought you guys might be interested, I sure am, but not for that price at this point in time.....

unless they break prematurely.

wow pricy, would it be worth it for that price, like u've never had any dramas with ur cv's have u Max, and how long u ben running ur lift/tires? sounds like they give it a good backing tho.

nah never had a problem with mine at all, but i try and use my head when wheelin as much as possible, not thrash the crap out of it at every opportunity.....

but when i regear and move up to 34's, the xtra torque in low range and extra grip from a simex type of tyre may be too much for the stock cv's....i dont know.

but atleast there is an option out there when there hasnt been before, albeit an expensive one.

Dont let fear hold you back Max. 37 inch Maxxis Trepadors would go nicely under the lux :D

Actually that is a very fair price Cal offroad CVs for Patrols are around 1600-1800 for the pair and a longfield superset is around 1200 and they have been around for years. Depending on the warranty claims it may be worth investigating. The 8 inch crown wheel if fitted with Cryo gears around 480 a set would be getting close to strong enough for 37" comp spec Treps.

If they are comparable to strength to longs they are definately worth looking into.

From what Ive read about these, if couple with decent aftermarket UCA's, you can get a little bit more down travel as these units provide more than the factory ones do.

just wondering if anything is happening with the import of these, im in canada and the states at the moment and have import and export numbers for my business over here and will be returning to Aus in August...if i can help out let me know.

looks like you need to send one in first for them to beef-up, i will have a look at the wreckers and see what the tacoma axles are fetching and see if there is a workable price at the end of the tunnel..

done some digging around at some places over here in canada, and from a parts supplier i use the shafts are about $130 each new for a base tacoma model, then what ever the cost of the beefing up.... but i will call him and see what type of deal he can do me...

i will look into shipping to Aus too and see what the costs are...but i think that they are looking to be a decent cost for a suposidly "unbreakable" shaft as their garentee states  im sure someone will try and test that...

Hey Fellas,

We have just about sorted some new CV's for the Hilux... much stronger and with better flex.

The specs on the CV's we will offer:
1.5 mm heavier shaft
15 mm extra extension at the CV... which equates to about 4" extra travel at the wheel.
Outside cup is 10mm bigger... making CV cup wall heavier.

Here are some images where you can see the extra girth these things are packing:

Still sorting out the final details with the supplier, so no price as yet.

More info as it comes to hand.

Cheers
