New genuine calipers can be bought from 280usd a side.

A brake place might not be willing to do the upgrade as it isn't legal.

I've just bought 2 brand new 150series calipers from onlineautoparts there in Aussie. ($146aud ea)
Cost me less than what wreckers wanted for just 1 used caliper here in NZ.

Have got a pair or genuine 338mm rotors, and pads to finish the set off.

Will be fitting it all when I get a chance soon.

Thats a pretty good price.

I never regretted upgrading my brakes.

That’s very interesting? I’m not familiar with the regulations in Tassie, but here in SA it’s not illegal to fit larger brakes. It is illegal to go down in size, but going up isn’t an issue unless they have recently changed the laws. I retained the 297mm front discs because I didn’t want to go larger than 16” rims, but fitted Nissan 315mm discs to the rear to replace the 295mm drums. It has transformed the vehicles braking ability.
I fitted a pair of those onlineautoparts front calipers (around $150 a pair if I remember) about 3 years ago and still working well. The only issue was that one of them was missing the brass olive that the brake line flair attached to, but was able to remove and fit one from the original caliper. Certainly quicker and easier than rebuilding the old pair.

Hmm the advice from the SA Gov is:

"When brakes are upgraded using components or systems which were not standard options for the vehicle, a Statement of Requirements or a report from an MR426 Chartered professional engineers may be necessary."

https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-an ... tions/cars

Still probably need a engineer to agree in writing that the larger front discs were available as an option to the hilux fitted with 297mm brakes. The TRD Hilux is an example.

The Nissan 315mm rear discs certainly weren't an standard option for the hilux.

Yes, the rear disc brake kit does have to be signed off by an engineer. I’ve done several in the past, but mainly engine conversions with and without brake upgrades. So far no issues getting exemptions provided the inspection passes the brake test machine. Just about to do a Brembo upgrade to my 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee which should easily pass.

Just fitted the brakes.
Made a huge difference to stopping performance.
Only thing I would recommend extra being needed is the small brake pipes from caliper to brake hose.

Pics of the bits I used and fitted on the Lux are here... https://www.flickr.com/photos/181793821 ... k3y0G4443K

I fitted 150 prado front calipers rotors pads and the original hilux pipes fit straight up no worries . Only thing is the brake shield plate needs to be massaged not to touch the rotor . Easy to bend and make a reasonably neat job of it .
Braking difference is outstanding . Also I run n80 factory 17" steel wheels not n70 16"

Gotta wonder why it wasn't standard.

Probably the extra expense for customers being stuck with 17" rims and tyres back then. Not as much of a big deal these days.

I guess that's one opinion!
My vehicle runs 15" rims & tyres because for some weird reason a greater amount of materials used to maintain the rolling diameter is cheaper.
