Is it a 2015 or 2016 onwards?

If 2015 the 120 ‘cruiser rotors fit but you need the calipers too. They are pretty cheap too.

But if they are warping it may be cheap rotors as the fault. Or you are towing loads without trailer brakes.

2012-15 Hilux have reasonable size rotors, if you buy good Aussie made T2 or T3 rotors they should last, but if overloaded they will warp too.

Im from the caribbean and apparently the models we get here from 2012 onwards have that issue from new.

Reviving this post from the dead.

Currently gathering info to upgrade front brakes as my 06 SR v6 lux brakes don't cut it.
Just need some confirmation, all I need from the 120 prados are 2x brake calipers, pads/discs/lines to suit and modify the current backing plates?
Would this setup work well with my current booster or do I need a different booster?

You will need larger rims if you have standard

Get the 120 series ‘cruiser backing plates, easier than modding originals.

Don’t bother with old calipers either, they are cheap new. A rebuild kit for old ones is like $75 per caliper.

Original booster is OK, but pedal feel is very soft. I fitted a modified VT Commodore/Calais double diaphragm one.

From memory you don’t need lines, the Hilux pipes connect up to the 120 series calipers.

If your budget can stretch to it buy Aussie made T2 or T3 rotors, they are about $210 each. You can buy cheap Chinese junk for like $75 a rotor too.

Make sure you spend half hour a side cleaning the hub faces too, get rid of all scale/rust. Very important.

Calipers are all over EBay, but ask at a brake place. Example:

Ask the same brake place about price for T2 or T3, my local place (Stopmaster brakes in Gateshead) were cheaper than eBay at the time. It cost me $570 for a pair of T3 rotors and a set of Bendix SUV pads back in August. You might get decent sales on EBay though with this Black Friday thing.

Booster did make a difference, pedal was spongy after the rotor and caliper upgrade, but still worked well. Booster wasn’t cheap though, cost about $650 for a fully rebuilt booster modified to bolt in. Was a VT Commodore, VT Calais or equivalent Statesman booster. No exchange needed. It is maybe 20mm deeper than the original, but cylinder moves forward fine. It came from Stopmaster too, out of Sydney somewhere.

Gosh they are cheap... and easier than rebuilding used ones (which wasn't hard but a bit of a pita).

But unbranded cheap brakes :shock: :roll:

The guys at the brake place reckoned they were OK, and my guess is most spare parts you buy to rebuild originals from now on will be from the same manufacturer. The rebuild kits I used for my used 120 calipers were genuine, no others available at the time.

On the same note, I’m using a VT master in my HK GTS, bought a genuine one in a genuine Holden box. It was simply a Chinese aftermarket one in a Holden box. Originals were PBR made here, but not any more. Wouldn’t be surprised if the originals on the Hilux are Chinese made or at least assembled in Thailand Freon Chinese bits.

Yeah we really dont know whats going on in the background or if the genuine parts I think I buy are dodgy.

Sorry to bring up an old post but I’m looking at doing this upgrade to my 2009 hilux. Can those who’ve done it advise if it’s a specific 120 series that the calipers are needed from? Kzj120 vs kdj120? Thanks

Any 120 series Landcruiser with the 338mm rotors. I’d buy new though, the rebuild kits alone are about $50 a side and it’ll take you a fair few hours of cleaning and rebuilding per caliper.

You’ll need to find a 120 series wreck to get the backing plates off, or see if Toyota still has them new. You may have to panel beat used backing plates as they often get damaged when a car has no wheels on it.

Hi guys, I've just read the whole write up.

I'm going to do the Prado brake upgrade on my 2010 sr5 diesel with abs non-vs,that came with 15" sr5 alloys.
I presume it has the early small brakes if it came with 15" wheels.

I'm running the 17" 2014 SR5 rims now so I am looking to run the 150 series calipers and disks that are 2mm wider than the 120 series disk.
There is a lot of info on shaving brakes, new brake lines, commodore booster and if you need Prado backing plates etc.

Does this seem to be what I need?
150 kd brake calipers
150 rotor disks
Bend the Hilux backing plate back
Bend the factory brake line to the new caliper
Done?

Has anyone used the cheap eBay calipers or go second hand genuine Toyota.?

I bought genuine 2nd hand 120 calipers and a genuine rebuild kit. It was a pita to get the pistons out but definitely worth the effort knowing all the seals were good as new.

Bending the backing plate was very easy. I dont remember needing to being the brake line. You shouldnt need to shave the calipers with those rims.

Given the rear drums do next to nothing, I wasnt keen to risk chinese ebay calipers.
I might be wrong.

Go to a reportable brake place
New callipers aren't that expensive
Don't try and but from Toyota, they don't make them anyway
If your not prepared to stand behind our Troops
Then try standing in front of them
