diesel auto is 3.7, everything else is 3.5 (in 4x4 models)
edit: apparently this has changed with the 5spd auto, which uses a 3.9 ratio

How embarrassing, been looking at the wrong gear ratio chart this whole time...

for my first re-gear I used 3.7's out of an auto. (mine is diesel manual)

they certainly took the edge off 33's, but not enough. I'm now running 4.1's which is a bit low for the highway (2500rpm at 110), but everywhere else is much better.

Really packeteer? I just acquired a set of 4.1:1 gear set to help with the low speed driving. How is the fuel consumption like when spinning at 2500 all day? I have a long drive coming up soon.

fuel use was slightly better, but the extra noise took some getting used to

I used to have the radio on 8 all the time, but these days it sits on 12 or higher :(

Sound deadening my friend, it honestly makes it more comfortable in the cabin. Even with my worn out 33's

mine's an SR5, so has a fair bit already. but yes, I am planning to strip it out, paint with bed liner or similar, then add sound absorption

3.9 or 4.1
go the lower gear if you tow or go offroad regularly

Hi guys
I have been over this thread a few times and every time I get to the end I am even more confused. I have a diesel manual and I put on 265/75/16 a few months back, having to gear down all the time is getting to me and at 1500 RPM down she doesn't sound happy. Tossing up between a 3.9 and 4.1 regear, the diff specialist is pushing the 4.1 saying 3.9 isn't with it as 4.1 has more gains but is yet to elaborate. I know 3.9 will bring it to stock gearing and 4.1 will bring it up 5.3% from stock gearing but I am wondering what difference this 5% will make? I know it is only 100 odd RPM but I wasn't a fan of the 8% difference in the opposite direction.
Image

what the pros and cons are of going to 4.1? From what I can gather
Pros
Touch better for crawling
quicker take offs

Cons
Revs too high?

I'm all ears for anyone's experience/input
cheers

You have a mnaual. that in itself should push you more towards the 3.9's because of the shorter 1st gear you have for takeoff and low range crawling, and still have 4 more options to go.

Auto's, depending on your use, and the much longer 1st gear, Id reccomend leaning more towards 4.1 than 3.9.

but as mentioned, depends on vehicle use/driving requirement/style.

for 265's, 3.9 ratio would be the best choice

see if you can get a second hand set out of an auto

cheers lads 3.9 it is. Think the diff guy just wanted to make money on the 4.1 instead of me supplying 3.9.

I've just trawled through all 28 pages but could I get some confirmation

My Prado 120 series 3.9 rear diff just shat itself, but to replace it will cost me close to a grand. However I can source a rear diff from a 100 series with 4.1s for bugger all

Will the 100 series rear diff fit the Hilux? I'm not worried about the fronts I can figure that out later. The ute only ever really spends time driving around town and towing trailers so I figure a step up would help.

100 series may be 9.5'' diff instead of the 8'' of the hilux. Can't confirm that just yet.

Anyone able to confirm whether 100 series rear is compatible?
