Someone here mentioned about swapping the front diff for a prado 120 item and the reply was the tube would need to be changed to remove the ADD. Does this mean it would be possible to fit a Prado Diff to an SR and make the ADD work?

Would it affect track width or anything for legalities?

When we did the original research, the centre housing was the identical part number and the tube was different so when I did the first one on my rig, we did not try retaining the tube. As far as adding ADD to an SR, you will probably get caught up with missing electrics so whether it is feasible to wire it up would be an issue gou would need to contend with.

Thanks Rod, I know the SR and SR5 use different wiring harnesses and had been wondering about the electrical side of it myself. Thanks for the info though. I was considering doing a quick diff swap to test out for myself how much of a difference the regearing makes before committing to lockers and the whole works.

Thanks again.

Just do it :D bolts straight in. Then you just need to sort the rear.

Well I have discovered I can purchase a front and rear diff from a prado 120 for $1000. Either 3.9 or 4.1 ratio. It does make the whole concept look a bit more appealing....

Can anyone point me in the right direction to have diffgears supplied and fitted in Perth ?

On another note i was thinking of doing it my self. After reading all this, do all auto hilux auto's have a 3.7 diff carrier ?

Was thinking of 4.5s running 285/70/17's anyone running this ? How's economy on highway ?

Thanks and merry xmas !

only the diesel auto has 3.7's
imo 4.5's are a little low for most people. tho it really depends how you use your ute

Do that is badically 33"?
Mine are 32" and have gone with 4.1 due to ease of getting them, i probably should have gone 3.9 for better economy. So you could prob go 4.1-4.3. I know this doesnt answer your question but this was my experience.
I had my gears supplied by locktup4x4 and installed by a bloke named david lane, hes on the hilux 4wd western australia facebook page.do far my economy has gone from 16.6 to 14.3 but i am still foing some economy tests to make sure this is a true reading.

Cool thanks, so I can get 4.1s to fit my auto 3.7 carrier ? I believe i have read properly. I'm towing 2tonne around Australia so economy is a big thing. I'll be fitting 285/70/17's instead of 265s on currently.

Is there a DIY diff gear post on here or anywhere else someone knows of. Surely it couldn't be that difficult.

Locktup4x4 only seem to list the 4.5s. I think 4.1s will be the go. Just need to find some

Slippery, if you're going to be towing big weights regularly, I wouldn't be increasing overall tyre diameter significantly. Definitely not good for braking performance.

Are your 265s the standard SR5 265/65/17 or ??

If you go 33s (287/70/17) your 4.1s are doing no more than approximately compensating for the increased tyre diameter, although they will be noticeable better than the stock ratio with the same tyres.

However, I think the 4.1s with the standard tyre diameter would work well, and give you some flexibility in wheel/tyre options.

I agree with Packets that the 4.5s, although great with the tall tyres, will be a bit busy with many tyre diameter choices, and perhaps a bit narrow in their application.

In summary - go 4.1 and keep the tyre diameter down. If you want to step up diameter when your towing trip is done, the 4.1s will still work much better than stock ratios.
