Hilux kun26r 2008 power steering pinion leak

Postby Yianni107 on Fri, 21 Oct 2022 11:36 +0000

Hi guys, recently discovered a small power steering fluid leak where the pinion and rack meet, seems to be coming out where the rubber dust shield is. I'm losing minimal fluid but it has been bugging me, steering wise everything seems ordinary. (Running 33" 285 maxxis razrs) so I have a few questions

- Is it a hard job to take out rack and replace wjth new one?
- How do you take out the steering rack? I can't find anything online with consistent answer (my car is a 2008 auto with abs)
- I recently bought Penrite powersteering fluid with stop leak to top up when runs low, will this fix leak or nah?
- should I try add Lucas's power steering leak stop to penrite fluid to maybe contain leak?

Thanks guys

Don't stuff around with the steering replace it. The tyre and size of your wheels put extra load on the rack .
Get a price off pedders to fit you have to get a wheel alignment anyway.

The search is your friend mate, there's a write-up on how to fix the leak.
I might be wrong.

Well more importantly then, has anyone used Lucas power steering stop leak to their hilux with the pinion seal minor leak?

And does this product damage power steering pump?

I sometimes get myself so fixated on a plan I have come up with that I can lose focus on what is important. It can be difficult to overcome this fixation to again see what is important.
I know nothing of this steering issue, but I do seem to recognise that the solutions offered seem to have the strong merit of a replacement part being a better option than trying to repair a faulty part. Especially when the repair method is generally recognised as a "Get me out of trouble" solution, rather than a long term fix.

That would apply to me if my steering had a problem, everything is perfect just a little leak around pinion

I would replace normally if it was $500 but we are talking thousands fir something that's just slightly leaking

It's my experience that "leak stop" solutions, like "barsleaks" or "stop leak" for radiators are a generally short term solutions. I have trouble believing that the solution you're talking about would be much better.
You'd be better off pulling apart your errant components and replacing the faulty seals/ "O"rings.

Maybe try your local wreckers, that might save a few pennies? Just remember, it IS front end and it IS steering. I'd strongly suggest if you go this way, then get a licensed mechanic to check it out afterwards to be on the safe side.
