2010 4WD 3L, 185,000Km "falls" out of 3rd

Postby NZFRANK on Sat, 27 Feb 2021 3:12 +0000

Hi,
With engine off, clutch in, engage 3rd gear. The lever returns to neutral under gravity. When driving, normally falls out of third, sometime stays in third for a while. No load, Load and overrun make no difference. All other gears stay in.
I believe previous owner held onto gear knob, as it is very shiny.
Anybody know what the fix is?
Thanks
Frank

Its rare but it does happen. Usually they get stuck in gear. Some info here:

Fortunately, the parts bin has plenty of cheap replacements

Alot of the hiluxs I looked at the gear lever felt very loose. I all ready have a bad case of buyers remorse these Thailand hiluxs are nothing to write home about compared to what ive done to older japanese toyotas.
The spring in the shifter in my petrol lux is weak as piss if not careful and miss the gate for 2nd, it will go into reverse one day Ill f$@#&% the gearbox pulling in the driveway creeping to the shed
Mine has supposedly only done 185k km .

I wonder if a box out of a V6 would work? The engine and box for an auto V6 were shipped to Thailand from the Landcruiser plants in Japan. I wonder if the V6 manual boxes were too?

mine is v6 the box in them is no better. Im not really a diesel bloke I did look at a lot of d4d hiluxs where I first noticed a lot had loose gear sticks Ive noticed the same issue in the 6 speed box in the 120 series prado 4 litre some of them Ive driven the shifter was pretty floppy compared to the 5 speed in the 90 series.
I'm quickly losing respect for Thailand Toyota.
I dont think box in the v6 will be any better
