Is there much point in a lift kit if the diff needs to be dropped anyways, eroding any clearance gains?

Key thing with lift kits causing CV problems is droop. If the lift gives you more droop then you are more likely to blow a CV as the CV angles are increased (they are weaker at angle and are weakest at the maximum angle).

Jack the front up and see if you can turn the wheel by hand. If you cant, the inner CV is binding so you definitely need a diff drop. I'd recommend a good quality diff drop kit anyway - not the spacer type.

The small footprint of the dropped diff isnt anything I worry about.

If the boot is rubbing against itself while sitting level, yeah I would recommend one. That looks 50/50 either way to me.
