Diff ratio/locker parts help

G’day guys

Hopefully someone can help me out. I’m wanting to change the diff ratios in my 2006 SR5 GGN25 auto. It’s been running 32’s since new & I’m over it. I do a lot of towing, a bit of wheeling, so the last thing I need is highway gearing. ARB are running the free compressor deal atm & their lockers are considerably cheaper than Harrops. Problem is ARB won’t do the gear ratio change & everyone they’ve recommended is either too busy or can’t/won’t give me a quote. I’m in western suburbs Brisbane.

My best/cheapest option atm is buying all the parts, installing the pump/wiring myself & getting a mechanic to do the diffs.

So can anyone help me out with all the part numbers as it’s a bit confusing going to 4.11 & needing prado bits. I’m assuming terrain tamer gears will be good?

If you have a read through the "fitting 33's" thread, you'll find the answers to all your questions (it all still applies with 32's), did you try the search function?

There’s too much info now a lot of the good info gets lost. Most of the pics I can’t view & website links are often dead. Thought someone might be happy to offer advice.

I am flicking through the 33’s thread atm though but at 66pages long it’s probably easier to find the answers on another website. My attention span won’t last that long, I’m good for maybe 6pages

This should help. Cant help you with fitting them though.

My advice is get ARB locker and get someone who has experience installing them. Your ARB dealer will have some names. I say this as my elocker is about to come out again. I'm not the only one who has had problems with an elocker.

I might also add that I tow a tvan sometimes running 265 65 r17 but mostly on 285 70 r17... I never use 5th gear but I never felt the need for it.

Thanks Hiluxxury, I did read through all that. Whilst ringing around & dropping into places I got the best service from CustomRV at Sumner Park. Everyone else was umming are arring & pointing me here & there while these guys just said yep no dramas & had a price to me same day. They do tons of custom work & all the mods & repairs on the 4wd action vehicles so hopefully they know their stuff.

He’s got me down for 4.11 gears which are better suited for 33” but I’m running 32”. I’d love 33” but legally that’s not the go. I quizzed him about 3.9 gears but he said you can’t get them....I might need to check that. BTW I’m in a 4.0lt petrol auto.

I am getting the ARB lockers, they’re about $600 ea. cheaper than the Harrops & they’re doing the free compressor deal. I’ve managed to wheel & deal my way into the twin compressor instead of 2 free singles so that’s good too.

Sounds like there’s potential problems no matter which lockers you get. Going ARB was solely price based, I was planning on E Lockers but I have seen pics of the dramas surfacing with them spitting pins & doing real damage.

Yeah, the compressor deal is a good one.

Have you tried a wrecker for 3.9 gears?
I might be wrong.

I’d rather go new so I haven’t checked the wreckers. I did just watch the Ronny Dahl modified episode with the TRD (the real one, not the gay one) & he’s running 4.1 with 33” & he’s getting better mileage raping his truck than I’m getting driving like a nanna. He’s driving so hard he burnt out his auto & didn’t mention any driveline issues. That makes me feel better. I may end up going 33” but I just spent a ton redoing my suspension so I won’t be redoing that in a hurry.

Man my eyes are going blurry. I just finished reading both posts on this TRD CAI upgrade. Massive amount of info here. I probably should’ve been keeping up with this forum a bit more.

I’ll add my couple of cents,
I have a TRD (the real one) and I’m not sure I agree with everything that guy said on the Ronny Dahl video, so don’t let that be the only evidence you use for your decision making. I will agree that the Ute is an absolute beast compared to all the other 4WDs dual cab or not.
FYI I run 265/70 17s , full time loaded with my tools for work - I get about 400-450k per tank in the city. (Std gearing)
I also have been running a ELocker for about 2 yrs + and have had 0 issues. Very happy with it and I would definitely buy one again!

Thanks for the info mate, I tow a 2.1t trailer for work & around town I’m getting 20l/100km. I don’t do enough highway driving to know my mileage there but if I could get 450km on the highway I’d be happy. I’ll do a mileage check on this tank because I’ve been unladen the whole tank. I do know I won’t get anywhere near where you’re getting even unladen.

When I look at the gear ratio charts it shows that Toyota have geared the Hilux to be on the highway geared side of the range. 4.11 on 32” will put me right in the middle sweet spot between highway & power, so I’m hoping that’ll make the car better for my needs.

Congrats on the TRD, they are a sick truck

No worries. Prepare to spend some dollars on new bearings etc. You may as well look at the rear wheel bearings and seals while the axle shafts are out... be sure to get japanese bearings and don't necessarily trust what the diff shop is putting in.

Partsouq is a good place for genuine parts. Some dealers are better than others for parts as well.

I’ve done the axles/bearings/seals already. I did specify to CustomRV that I wanted all Japanese bearings. They’re a terrain tamer dealer & the terrain website says Japanese bearings in the kits, so that should be good. The quote was for $5600, that’s 4.1 ratio, solid spacer, twin locked, twin compressor, wired & plumbed. I thought that was pretty good. I actually thought to get the price down that low I might have to plumb in the compressor/switches myself.

It’s booked in for Monday week, which isn’t ideal because I’m about to head up to the tablelands pulling my tool trailer, I’m probably going to have to delay the trip just to wear the gears in.

Lockers & diff gears are in, I’m doing fuel consumption tests atm. Feels good though. Definitely feels like it’s geared more for what I use it for now. I’m heading to Mt. Mee on the weekend to test out the lockers, good times.

Congrats! Installing a locker was the best (and worst) thing I have done to my lux :lol:

I don’t know the exact brands of the parts used & to be honest I’d rather not know now it’s done. I was very specific about Japanese parts though. I went the 4.1 ratio gears & all up it cost me $5,627.90. That’s with the free twin ARB compressor. They seem pretty good in there too, he made up a pretty serious custom 3mm aluminium bracket to mount the compressor behind the driver side headlight too. I’m hoping I’ve still got room to squeeze that TRD CAI in now.
