Postby leghorn on Sun, 01 Sep 2019 7:02 +0000

I want to know has anyone tried or thought of bolting on a "6 speed gearbox out of a prado Gx/GXL" into their hilux to upgrade the 5 spd gearbox. Is it possible???
Thoughts are welcome...

Many hany thought about it but I don't recall anyone actually having a go at it. I've had gearboxes out of both to replace clutches and it all looks possible, only difference I could see it that the input shaft on the prado box is different and clutch actuator works different. Feel free to be the first and let us all know! [emoji6]

Yes it is possible but one of the main problems is the propellor shafts are different lengths.

I bought a prado 6 speed and transfer sometime ago for this conversion as I really want the full time 4wd that the transfer gives you. It sat in my garage for a while and then I decided it wasn't worth it - mainly because the 6th gear is a ghost gear with 3.5 diffs (the standard hilux 5th gear is nearly a ghost gear with 33in tyres and 3.5 diffs), so I'd have to regear as well. It wasn't worth the effort.
I might be wrong.
