Rear Drum Brake Adjustment

Postby Skrewdriver on Mon, 03 Jun 2019 10:18 +0000

Hello,

I need some help/advice on adjusting the rear drum brakes on my 2012 SR5 Hilux. Turbo Diesel, 5 speed manual.

I replaced both sets of brakes and had both rotors and drums machined. The rear brake shoes were original from Toyota, and lasted 7 years and over 220,000km. Needless to say, they were FUBAR.

I spent all of Saturday working on the car, and I have never adjusted rear drums myself.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated please. I know how to actually do the job, but I don’t want to wind the shoes out so much that they are dragging on the drum, then I will be back to square one.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Without going into a lengthy explanation, have a look at this. No rear need to take the wheel off. You just need some slight drag when you spin the wheel.

I find the biggest challenge is finding a stubby screwdriver to fit between the leaf spring and in the hole on the backing plate.
