Axle Problem?

Postby samswrong on Tue, 09 Apr 2019 7:24 +0000

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this website has already been a wealth of information for me.

photos will be posted below.

07 Hilux

A few months ago I started to hear a very slight "rubbing noise" coming from my back left brake drum, I thought this noise disappeared for a while so I stupidly ignored it. Then while driving from Perth to Broome it progressively got worse. Suddenly my back left tyre was smoking badly and making horrible clunking and knocking noises, brake fluid had leaked all over the road. I got home and replaced the brake cylinder and pads. My thought being the brake pads were set wrong and rubbing against the drum brake. This didn't fix the problem, my next train of thought was the wheel bearings, now I have taken apart the axle and I have found at the diff seal there are lots of metal shavings and not much diff oil. Also on the axle itself there are signs of damage. I am writing to find some clarification on what might have happened and what has exactly caused this? Im at a point where I think I have to take it to a mechanic, they all have pretty average reputations around town so I would like to know the exact problem and root of the problem so I don't get messed around with pricing etc.

A stuffed wheel bearing or bent axle are probable causes. Does the bearing have much play? How much oil is in the diff itself?
I might be wrong.

yeah there is a little bit of play with the wheel bearing, just checked the diff fluid then and there was pretty much none there, so I must have lost the diff fluid and the brake oil, would a buggered wheel bearing be able to cause the brake cylinder to fail?

The oil loss sounds odd with the info provided but anything is possible.

The brake fluid however could have easily been lost due to a damaged brake cylinder from a worn bearing or bent axle causing the drum to rub on the brake linings improperly.

Replace the bearing and get the axle checked. Any good driveline shop should be able to do that.

Pop the seal put and inspect the bearing, I'll be it's shagged!

If your rear axle has ABS installed, it could be the ABS sensor that has been destroyed. It's located exactly where that wear stirp is shown. Here's a link that will help.
