2007 4WD dual cab with ABS axle compatability

Postby outbackjoe on Thu, 13 Dec 2018 2:11 +0000

Hi Guys

Just had some fun on the nullarbor. Rear wheel bearing failed pretty good, took out abs ring rotor, burnt off rubber caps on brake cylinder, destroyed oil seal and chewed out axle from impact with axle housing. Got a new bearing kit (waited 5 days), couldn't get locking ring onto axle due to damage, did some dodgy welding to get me to Melbourne.

I need a new axle. I see conflicting info on axles on ebay, did the setup on the rear change in 2008 or something?

I'm after a wreckers axle / hub complete assembly. Does anyone know what year range will suit my 2007 model?

Cheers

Joe

Any thoughts on this? Looks like something changed in 2008, but they all take the same bearing kit, dunno if the 2008+ axles will fit my 2007 model.

Toyota don't usually change stuff mid model, so I'd be surprised if the axle is different at the diff end, but you could check part nos for where the diff accepts the axle spline and confirm they are the same.

You mention ABS so maybe something slightly different in the hub or brake drum, but again I would be surprised, because I don't think anything much changed there until the introduction of traction and stability control.

Maybe some slight difference between Aus and other markets ? This would be more likely to show in Ebay listings than at a local Toyota dealer.

You may have thought of this, and I have no idea of cost, but what about looking for a complete drum to drum rear end ? Your jigger has copped a lot of miles and a lot of work, so a second hand rear end may not necessarily be a step backwards. Put new bearings in each side before you fit it and you're GTG.

Hey mate thanks for your reply. Yeah I could do the entire axle assembly, but I got a diff locker, and I dunno how to move it and I haven't got the tap to make the screw fitting for the air line. Plus I've gotten pretty good at just taking the axle out. I reckon I can have the old one out and new one installed in less than half hour. Whole axle assembly I dunno how long, and it's hard coz I'm not home so don't have access to my shed and tools. Could end up being an option though if I can't find the right axle.

There was an update in 02/2008. New axle and a bigger bearing.... https://www.allfourx4.com.au/epages/sho ... s/LCKIT03C

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I swapped out my 2005 rear end for a 2012 axle etc for this upgrade. I have the old one in my back yard but I doubt its much use to you being in the ACT.

Shouldn't be hard to find the parts though.

Hey dude thanks for that. It's confusing that on ebay there's bearing kits advertised as suitable from 2005 to 2015. By the pics they look like the 2005 to 2008 bearing.

I would have thought an axle shouldn't be too hard in Melbourne but I've tried every wrecker and every gumtree add with no luck. There's too many conditions: tight year range + abs + 4WD. Hopefully some new stock comes in first thing next year.

Is the post 2008 axle housing and diff the same? If i got the post 2008 axle complete with bearing and hub and brake assembly any chance it would bolt up to mine?

Yes if you got the housing, the diff will bolt right in. The axle inputs to the diff are the same, so too are the brake parts.

Only changes were made to accommodate the new bearings - so that is where the bearings sit on the axles and in the housing.

I will be a bit closer being in Bright Vic on boxing day if you run out of luck and need an axle..?

I think I can get both left and right axles with hubs post 2008. If they'll bolt straight in to the existing axle housing and diff that might be a good option. Are the new bearings better? Why did you upgrade?

Cheers for offering your axle. I'll send a pm.

My diff was shot so when the updated rear end came up on ebay with a locker, I jumped at the opportunity. The elocker has since been a whole world of pain but that's another story.

The updated bearings are stronger but they won't fit the old housing.

I've sent you a PM about the axle.

The bloke at the wreckers is adamant that the later version complete hub assembly and axle wont fit my vehicle. He didn't explain why, other than that he is very experienced and knows it wont fit.

Since your old axle is non-ABS I think I am back to waiting for some new stock to come in to Melbourne wreckers.

Ring All 4x4 in Kotara first thing Monday morning. They may be able to freight one that you’ll get later in the week.

Hey guys thanks for your replies. I ended up ordering a complete rear end from a 2014. Too hard getting the correct axle, plus the new one should be more reliable and way better availability of parts. Some info for anyone who has similar issues:

1. Axles, axle housing and bearing designed changed in 2008
2. ABS axle is different to non-ABS axle. The profile of the machining is different. You can't slip an ABS rotor onto the non-ABS axle. It's got no where to fix to.

Happy new year!
