Gearbox disassembly help

Postby JC90 on Fri, 23 Nov 2018 7:04 +0000

My gearbox got stuck in 5th gear this morning on the freeway.(2008 kun26r) No amount of clutching and wrenching on the gear lever would get it out. I eventually put so much pressure on the gear stick that it appeared to pop back to the neutral gear position on the H pattern but the box actually remained in 5th gear.

I'm attempting the remove the gearbox rear extension housing to see what the problem is, without removing the whole box from the car. But am having trouble getting the housing to seperate from the rest of the box. It has come away from the carrier plate and I am able to move it around but its hanging up on something inside and I'm unable to remove it totally.

Is there some trick to getting it off that I'm missing?

Google r151f disassembly.

Have you towed or driven around slowly in 5th gear? Might be worth getting a low 2nd hand box.
I might be wrong.

Well managed to get it apart. Because it was stuck in 5th the shift lever arm was trapped and couldn't rotate out of the way to allow the extension housing to come free.

It appears the thrust washer on 5th gear had disintegrated and allowed the gear to move on the shaft which caused all the drama. I bought this box off a guy about 12 months ago who had rebuilt it, looks like he may have left out a snap ring when he put it back together.

Where is the best place to buy parts for these boxes?

Toyota... for genuine parts. There are non genuine suppliers online.

You could also change out the bearings which are available from any bearing supplies shop. Just make sure they are Japanese.
