Clutch started slipping a while ago 70000 on the clock. Went to Toyota last week and spoke to one of the service guys. All he asked was if it was chipped or had an after market exhaust then had a quick look to make sure it didnt. Replaced the clutch 2 days later under warranty. Was happy with that as thought they might have blamed the 152ltr Brown Davis fuel tank when they had it on the hoist.

Will be interesting to see how long the new clutch lasts. My SR5 did something like 65,000 ks on the 1st clutch, then 2 failed at 18,000 intervals after the 1st clutch died.
At this time the dealership changed hands & the new service manager wouldn't replace it under warranty so I brought a heavy duty clutch & haven't had an issue since.

I have a 1986 model with 300K on it. Still on the original clutch. I do look after it tho. Always slip it into neauteral at the lights and never ride it.

07 with 320,000 on the clock, replaced once. Farm ute towing a 5 tonne fuel trailer at times, syphon trailers, service trailers, dingo trailers etc.

12 with 88,000 on the clock, still in tip top shape, no replacements needed as yet.

that's (was?) my impression as well.
in 1st I'll not push the throttle untill all is rolling and clutch pedal is released, THEN it's time to accelerate.

However I'd assume eveyone understands that and tries to go that way? There might be this one time where you need to leave nose up with a trailer that requires a bit more spin? For that I did the ADD 2WD Low mod so instead of burning out my clutch I can drive to a more flat surface and pop back to high.

But with only 35K' on my dec. 2015 Lux it doesn't really count yet, does it

I think this comment is spot on.

"Premature" clutch failures are rare, "Abused" clutch failure less so.

I changed the clutch on my '14 Hilux at the end of our Aus Outback tour. Only because the thrust bearing was failing (noisy as) and it was a warranty job, so might as well change the clutch while the box is out.

67,000km of hard arse, as difficult and destructive as it gets type country, towing all the way. The OEM clutch was fine - showing the expected wear - but no where near failure.

Put in an Xtreme Outback heavy duty clutch. Love it.

Cheers. Spoke to them today & its going to be similar $$$ for me to.

Have narrowed it down between the NPC or 4Terrain Ultimate.....which is around $500 cheaper to not needing a new flywheel. Decisions decisions :?

My 2011 needs clutch upgrade as having problems with my 2t van. Works ok no van so looking for a heavy duty. What's the latest recommendation given some have had new clutches for a while now.

I have a 4 Terrain Heavy Duty Clutch that's been in now for 40,000 or 50,000km.

It's been a great clutch - certainly a more positive clutch than the stock unit.

My only complaint is a click or tick that occurs when the clutch pedal is released - clutch in and the noise goes away. I only hear it when I'm driving slowly.

About 10,000kms ago I swapped out the thrust bearing for a genuine Toyota bearing - the noise didn't go away. While I had the gearbox out I inspected the pressure plate fingers as boxhead suggested some time ago and they all were even. Perhaps one day I swap out the clutch - until then, I'll ignore the noise.

Well i have just read this whole thred from the start, and I don't know what
I have done right but i got 375000ks out of my stock clutch. It has been replaced with a Exedy one that is better for sure. This is on a 2006 space cab. The olny thing I can put this down to running small tyers maby? (225/75/16). The clutch was still working ok but was replaced as preventative maintenance. I have towed a horse float quite a bit but i think the other thing is out in the bush we just don't have to change gears as much as somebody driving in traffic every day.

I think knowing how to use a clutch helps.

Though some vehicles have definitely had dud clutches.

Yep my 2012 slipped as soon as i put a new exhaust on it with 5 000km. [on the bitumen 3rd gear with standard size tyres]
When i pulled out the clutch it still looked new and pressure plate still had machine marks from factory, pressure plate was just to weak.
I read this thread years ago and noted that alot of the cars were [from memory] around the 2012 2013 era.
Coincidentally didn't they up the killerwasps or newton meters of torque for these models.

They upgraded the clutches once down the line with the slight power increase. Originally the lux was 121kW, had a 260mm flywheel and clutch plate to suit, then somewhere this was increased to 126kW with a bit more torque and paired with a 275mm flywheel/clutch plate in 09/2008. Not much of a gain. No change since then.

I know the clutch sizes definitely changed on those dates, but unsure about the power increase if it happened at the same time as clutch upgrade or if it was a bit later down the track.

Hi all, this is still the best forum out there. Been away for a while but feels like I never left when I started reading.
For this thread I am now up to 340,000 and still on the original clutch and no tell tail signs yet, touch wood. Will probably change later this year as a preventive maintenance issue, some big miles coming up next wear.
