The problem is that 1st in hi four is way to high especially with big wheels, I must say that I was majorly disappointed after owning two 2x hilux's they are so much tougher. Oh well might just have to change diff ratios.

Got clutch replaced today 11,000kms... Saw the clutch that was removed and still had tons of life left in it. The clutch never really slipped but just shuddered ya' brains out ya butt on take off and reverse and has since very early on.. My driving style is pretty sedate on road. I never tow. Used pretty hard off-road though and did a pretty hard trip at about 1500km all I can think is maybe due to exclusively doing highway driving the clutch never broke in properly and then seated itself funny in that first trip? I was told when I bought it no 4x4 in first 1000km but yea.. On the warranty form Toyota wrote loose clutch springs but who knows what the real findings are. I just hope to get a year out of this one and then put an NPC one in before cape trip.

without being rude mate, i'd say you did some pretty violent off road work to stuff the clutch springs in that time. did you drop the clutch a lot when changing gears?

That's just assuming that Toyota aren't just bullshitting which seems to be all they are good at since they can't make a half decent car anymore.

30,145 km on original clutch 4/2012 SR Extracab manual. Not alot of hardcore 4x4 just a bit of bush bashing on fairly tame tracks. Mostly city driving.

After having the first unit replaced at around 45k (under warranty), its up to the same olds tricks again at 50.
I'm guessing so long as Toyota persist with the dual mass flywheel, the situation is unlikely to change.
Though I was advised by a Toyota tech to knock it back a gear to let the motor spin up a bit more and help the plate clamp harder - which more or less negates the point of a torquey diesel in the first place in my opinion.

Interestingly, removing the Steinbauer module over the weekend solved the clutch slip issue.
But thats a story for another day..

2012 SR5 diesel, has shuddered since new and has now started slipping at 29,000 km's, went to the dealer and told them and they booked it in for a new clutch without any questions.
I only tow a box trailer occasionally and have done very little 4x4 and am very careful with the clutch, I never ride the clutch, don't rev it when changing gears. I also have 32's on the ute.

I looked it up. You're correct.
Funny thing is when I suggested a heavier clutch may be the solution the first time around to the Toyota guy, I was told it was due to the flywheel setup, not the clutch. There are many owners running around assuming this it would seem.

Guess its fair to assume if Toyota designed the clutch to slip at a certain (STD) load, its kind of pointless plugging the Steinbauer back in without fitting something like a an Excedy, unless you nurse it everywhere and dont load it up or tow anything, which is also pointless..

Are the 2wd d4d clutches different to the 4wd models?

18,500 ks & just under 12 months on this one. Almost no towing, still have the VMN chip fitted on its as sent setting.
Can't work out how the original clutch lasted 60,000 ks & the last 2 have done less than 20,000 ks each.

What's the best heavy duty aftermarket clutch to fit?

Yep. Number 4. Almost 12 months to the day. Up to 92,000 ks, woo hoo!
POS
Hopefully Toyota will pay for another one.

Can anyone recommend someone to install an npc clutch on the Northside of Brisbane who does quality work and doesn't charge through the roof?

How's this happening? Do you take off in second or something ? My clutch hasnt been replaced yet at nearly 190k. Previous owner used to tow a caravan and go 4x4ing and now I take it 4x4ing admittedly nothing too rough though. First gear is too high though, especially with 32s on. Anybody know if changing diff ratio affects arb air lockers?

Buggered if I know. I had a 2005 SR, done 110,000ks in 2 years, towed all sorts of farm machinery upto 4 tonne, heavy sand work, never missed a beat. Sold it to a mate & last I heard it had done 200,000ks, no worries.
The original clutch on this car towed our 2,200kg van up north, quad bikes on tandem trailer into sand hills, on the beach every day for the 1st year of its life. The last 3 haven't done anything like that. Dragged the quads into the sand hills twice. The last clutch didn't even do that!
Have fitted a heavy duty clutch so we will see what happens with that.
All I can think of is the VMN chip creates too much torque, but that was fitted when towing the van, so who knows. Toyota don't know or care.
Oh, by the way, I have 2 quads for sale now
