Should update mine too. Replaced at 152000ks. Still had about 10,000ks max left in it. Rear main was also replaced along with anything in there that was replaceable.

It regularly towed a 2.4 tonne plant trailer, and carted around tools all the time. I think I had a pretty good run out of it considering. Driven with a lot of mechanical sympathy.
Replaced with a HD clutch and its much better.

hilux clutches are shit.in 8 months as a service advisor I have seen way to many hilux clutches replaced. I also own a 09 sr5 that despite the previous owner having it loaded to the hills with accessories till he swapped them onto his new 2013 hilux is on its original clutch & still good touchwood.
the fact they are geared to tall from factory doesn't help.my mates 99 lux went up same hill right behind me in 4low in 3rd that mine needed 2nd with.also making a light clutch for more passenger car like feeling is another part.funny thing is we see plenty of v8 70 series cruisers which are geared low & haven't had to look at a clutch yet. seriously 3.5 or there about diff ratios are for passenger car weights & tyre profiles not 2.5 tonne 4wds & 29+ inch tyres. if factory warranty isn't an option we usually fit a 4 terrain clutch.had a few issues with them but once rectified all good.
in saying though if u have a sr5 do the low 2wd mod will help a lot with towing etc

I've done 15000km on my 2013 Sr5 and yesterday took it off-road for the 2nd time. 1st hill I went up in H4 off the beach and an instant smell of burnt clutch. This never happened the first time I was at the same place a few months back, but I tow the dirt bikes into the hills most Saturdays, does this mean it's stuffed already?

I purchased a brand new 2013 sr5, clutch smoked on the first hill start towing the caravan (1 ton) at 3000km, low range was required. First trip off road I was not impressed, constant clutch smoking up inclines decided off road requires low range also. Clutch has a very strong shudder when stop staring in first gear. Missing my 80 series already..

I have 2012 SR on its 3rd clutch. Done 45,000kms. Toyota do not hesitate to replace each time, they do however refuse to replace it with anything other than standard. I know of two others with similar problems, none of us tow very often....we do not own a trailer between the 3 of us!

What is suppose to happen when warranty runs out? No way I will be hanging onto it to find out.

This is poor form from Toyota, not to figure out a better solution. For such a great vehicle in every other aspect its a shame really.

I have a '12 SR5 like you & it has done 20k+ & never had a problem yet, but, I am really interested as to why your clutch was not covered under warranty ???

So I rang Newtown Toyota and spoke to the service manager explaining the shuddering and burning stench. Anthony Radice who I spoke with said Toyota would have to make an assessment based on what they find, but the clutch is perfectly suitable for this vehicle and he warned that an upgraded clutch would only put big stress on other components.
It sounds very much to me like Newtown have also been "burned" with lots of replacement clutches under warranty and they are very deffensive about this now. I'm waiting for their clutch specialist to return from hols and taking it in for an assessment in February. I just don't trust these guys already, I've been trying to get my free map upgrade which Josie promised me when I bought the ute in July last year, but just keep getting ignored and promised it's being looked at...
Seems like Toyota have fallen under the same spell as Holden and Ford, it's all a numbers game about new vehicle sales. Service stops when you drive your hard earned off the showroom floor. I cannot tolerate lies and dodgy service, sow I'll keep you updated on progress with unresponsive Newtown Toyota.

Poll: How many times has your clutch died?

Postby boxhead55 on Wed, 22 Jan 2014 11:07 +0000

I have worked for many companies now. Toyota is the OLNY manufacture that will replace a slipping or shuddering clutch under warranty after 1000km. All the others stop any warranty repair after 1000km. And state (if it was fine up to then it must be driver use causing the issue)

But like I said toyota cover up to 100000km or 3 years for slip and shudder.

Also when the clutch is used hard it does stink! This is normal, like hitting your brakes real hard they will also smell.

Have a great day

Does this not speak volumes that Toyota replace clutches under warranty...? it could only be so because Toyota are the only manufacturers that fit sub standard clutches to new vehicles which result in premature clutch failures.
If you make a car that's meant to go off-road, give it the strength to go offroad, not just the marketing that's says it does. Toyota used to be a brand the masses could rely on to do what it said on the tin. Now they make cheap unrealiable cars to match their careless service ethic. Oh, and contrary to your analogy of smelly brakes, If clutches were meant to burn and stink, why is it that after 30 years of driving manual cars, this is the first time I've experienced it?

Looks like my 28K old clutch is about to follow the proud tradition..

A question for anyone whos claimed under warranty, did you cop any grief for aftermarket gear? Toyota claims the right to decide if failure was due to general wear and tear - what the f**k else would it be - abuse or manufacturing defect at their discretion. I'm thinking having a Steinbauer plugged in may be all they need to hammer the claim with a big VOID stamp. Or maby the added mass of the bullbar and spotties were outside the design parameters of the clutch..

Really disappointed with this. Bugger all K's, STD tyres, and never gets loaded with anything heavier than a pair of kids and a packed lunch.

How do I tell if my clutch is stuffed? Im on my second and its not bad but occasionally it takes a second or two to lock into gear.. is it slipping or is that normal?

Not exactly sure when the second clutch was fitted as I bought it already done.

If it's slipping, your revs should shoot up quite high for a second until the clutch grabs whilst driving. Kind of feels like you've lost traction momentarily.

Not sure if it's related to how long your hilux takes to lock into gear though.
Cheers,
Jay
