2011 Hilux SR5 TD
First clutch at 7,000km
2nd clutch at 14,000km
3rd clutch at 24,000km
And I’m on 34,000km now and its slipping again.
I don’t tow anything heavy.
I dont ride the clutch.
Just had problems from day 1.
Toyota have replaced it under warranty every time, the last time was a bit of a battle.
Toyota told me that they had Fly wheel problems from factory and this is why it’s being slipping.
The clutch was only engaging about 25%.
Toyota can shove it as I’m sick of my Hilux being in the workshop every 4 months for a new clutch.
So about to put an Exedy Tuff clutch and fly wheel in to fix the problem at my cost.

I think mine has just died right now.
Clutch pedal just dropped to the floor. Only thing is that I hadn't been feeling any slippage. Maybe it could be the thrust bearing. I'll soon find out

mate wouldn't be the thrust bearing, could be the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder..

Poll: How many times has your clutch died?

Postby toyboata on Fri, 04 May 2012 9:55 +0000

It boggles my mind to see how many clutch failures some people are having. What's going on? They can not be that bad seriously?
I've done near on 40,000km in my 2010 SR5 D4D and I thrash the shit out of it. Do some occasional towing and carrying loads but mostly unladen . Have 33's and all the fluff to weigh her down. My clutch feels as good now as I did from the day I bought the Lux.
I've actually never come across any vehicle that had such terrible clutch that needed replacing so often. Never In 14 years of being a mechanic. I find it hard to believe the Hilux one could be so bad. In my experience it, like with many problems with brakes also, often comes down the the driving style of the operator.
Are some of you driving everywhere with your foot constantly resting on the pedal? Riding the clutch instead of using brakes to stay still on hills? There's something going on surely that is beyond faulty clutches. Toyota would surely be flat broke by now if they were that bad.
There must be quite a few out there that were made on Friday afternoons by the sounds of it maybe.

Swinny , you're bang on the money. I put a kit through the master cyl. Then bled the line and problem solved.

Toybota , I strongly agree with you.

I replaced my clutch $600 thinking that was the fault. Very disappointed when I found out that this didn't fix my problems. The old clutch (original about160000ks old) had plenty of life left in it perhaps another 100000ks. The throw out bearing and spigot bearing was shagged but still functional. Obviously caused by mud running.

The first seal in the master cylinder was my problem. Totally shagged out. Genuine Toyota would only sell me a complete master cylinder $225. So I got a kit from bersons $18.

My conclusion is that I am poor at diagnosis. But happy with my new silent smooth clutch.

I've recently picked up an 08 v6 sr with only 19k on the clock. Now my clutch hasn't started to slip but the pedal enagages the clutch right at the end of the travel. I don't know how it was driven before but I think that I will obviously be changing a clutch in the near future ...

33"s and the clutch will still get it chirping in the dry......Not that i do it that much....

No sign of slipping after 45,000klms with the 33's,

My clutch is slipping, 2011 with only 10k miles on it. Truck used as a car hardly worked at all, lad at dealer told me in the last month he's had 3 hilux clutch failures on vehicles that are only just over a year old!

Says that all 3 that have failed or are slipping have one common thing thing that we're all running BF muds - told him there is no way that could be a factor on the slipping clutches. He agreed but says it was just one thing he noticed

WTF is going on here? Thought I'd get at least 100k miles out of a clutch.

I had similar issues with clutch slipping after installing a after market chip (ChipIt), Petrol Injection, Safari Snorkle Kit, & 3" Exhaust on my 2010 Hilux D4D. First session on the beach and the clutch smoked within seconds. I talked with a few guys here in Brisbane and I got connected with NPC (Nick's Performance Clutch). The bell housing in the Hilux does not offer alot of room, the guys from NPC redesigned the fly wheel and they were able to fit a Exedy Safari Tuff Clutch from a Late 90's Toyota Land Cruiser 4.2 I6 1HZ (from memory TYK-6869ST). John Tate Automotive did the install in 2010 (5000km on the Hilux). At the time of the install John had done ~3 Hilux clutch upgrades. Since 2010 I have put another 32,000km on that clutch, many km on the beach and one trip up the cape towing a off road trailer. Hit all the trails (CREB, Frenchmen's, South & North Old Telegraph Track, & Palmer River Gold Mine) I have never had any issues with the clutch and it is well worth the upgrade. With any engine performance upgrades or with the install of 32" tires a clutch upgrade is a requirement.

Ive done 19000 on my 2012. Have used it for a little towing but nothing too serious. It slips all the time in third gear and has a bad shudder. Toyota tell me its not warranty. not happy

Today I finally ordered a new clutch/flywheel kit from NPC in Brisbane for my 2006 single cab work ute.

It's apparently the landcruiser one with a new flywheel to suit, a "safari" clutch, the heaviest they do.

At 311,000kms the clutch is still actually working (poorly), but the gearbox keeps falling out of 5th on the highway.

As we're taking the box out for overhaul anyway, we might as well put a new clutch in as well and try and get another 100-150,000kms out of her...

I bought my car with 160k on the clock and replaced the clutch not soon after. Toyota told me it was the original but who knows... Replaced with a " heavy duty trd clutch" that's what they said anyway no problems as yet nearing the 200k mark.

I've got a 2012 model. bought from new with 32' m/t.. had a whine in the clutch from about 2000kms. Toyota said they couldn't hear anything and last weekend I attempted to reverse up a driveway in H4, got halfway up then didn't go anywhere with my foot right off the pedal . I know they run a dual mass fly-wheel set up,, has anyone got any suggestions on after market clutches,my car has 22,000 kms on it now and i doubt that a genuine Toyota clutch will fix the problem

I'm away on holidays and mine is slipping 2012sr5 t diesel, towing 1.3tonne boat. 11,000kms, dealer reckons they can't find anything wrong, but I don't think they looked too hard It started at 8200kms and is getting worse, gains 300 to 400 rpm and then bites and then does this 2 or 3 more times, usually 3rd or 4th gear under hard acceleration up a hill. Is it possible this is the dual mass flywheel turnout slipping and then biting? I really don't understand how the flywheel setup works, can anyone enlighten me?

We got the box out of this one and sent it to brissy for overhaul.

The original clutch was well worn down almost to the rivets, but not scored or anything like that.

The new Excedy/NPC setup looks a lot more heavy duty, especially the thrust bearing which is much bigger and seem to be better made.

I'll catch up with the gearbox bloke in the morning and see how that looks.
