They tell me it will take three weeks to come from Japan. I thought they were built in Thailand? Can't believe they don't have one in Aust. with the amount of failures they have.

Hey CRH88

Mine had a shutter from day dot to. Just had it fixed and it made no difference, almost worse. only done 8000kms.
Does anyone know what else it could be??

1st clutch @ 10k
2nd clutch @70k
yota said," the clutch isnt designed to clamp, but to slip all the time.." wtf im a mechanic and i flipped my $h!t.
then i was told," i've been in the business 20 yrs and never seen a slipping clutch, nor has toyota (NT) every replaced one under warrenty", funny i had one done at 10k.
has any1 else had these problems???
the clutch test they do is hand brake on, 1st gear hi, then attempt to drive off.
i told them to try a 200kg trailer on the back, or sand.
i can get it to slip on cue, but they wont have a bar of it.
dont even get me started on the lsd

adjust your handbrake /rear drums , if the handbrake is anything like mine without adjustment its crap and u can drive with it on anyway, sounds like its just an easy out for them

Life would be simpler if the final Diff Ratio wasnt so tall. Even gently sloping boat ramps require 4wd to retrieve the average small to medium boat. I sold my hilux before I needed to replace the clutch, which was definitely dying, by the smell and the tacho at times. I'm not the only one who has a hilux and hates boat ramps or reversing a boat trailer up a slope.

I have a 05 4.0 V6 dual cab. How hard will it be to change the clutch myself? I have some mechanical knowledge.

Had to replace my clutch after the thrust bearing destroyed its self. Toyota would only cover the thrust bearing even though it had only done 70,000 ks and still suffers from a shudder when I take off! and this is the 4th hilux I have had agree with all your coments present hilux is a 2007 sr turbo diesel ute.Still think they are still the better choise and definately got some go!

I think I need to change my vote to 'Not yet but I'm sure it's on the way out'. The shudder and slippage is getting worse and more often. I went to take off from a steep intersection yesterday and didn't move. . . . and that smell should be in horror movies because it scares the crap out of me every time I smell it. I had to sit in the office yesterday smelling like The Toxic Avenger. :x

I'm just about to order a new clutch and it ain't from Toyota. ;)

I've had the thrust bearing replaced once at 60K, the complete cluch assembly replaced again at 80K, and now at times when I take off it sounds like I have a stall converter (its a manual) but it's not slipping under load (110k)...... does that make sense :?: .

I'm getting a new gearbox (thanks to Toyo extra care warranty :D ) and whilst they are changing it out, they are going to fit my new clutch that I'm getting from the Ulitmiate Suspension guys :D :D :D

That will end all my problems thats for sure.

G'day all, Just had my clutch replaced at 43,000km. Toyota tried to dodge it, but ended up doing it under warranty.

Hey guys,

My clutches have shuddered from 26,000kms onwards

throwout bearing went at 26,000kms replaced under warranty

throwout bearing went again at 44,000kms had them put exedy after market HD clutch in and had massive vibrations in it at low revs, shudder was the same, clutch was accused of being dodgy and sent of to be tested by exedy, came back that it was working fine, toyota refused to install exedy one back in as they said they were bad for the car and installed new genuine clutch which worked ok but still with shudder on take off

Clutch started slipping at 60,000kms still with shudder Springwood toyota said it was ok and should put up with it, complained to head office and was asked to take it to new dealership-Southside Woolongabba they stated it needed a new clutch. New clutch was put in and returned to me with them asking to have it back next week as the shudder was worse than the old one getting replaced and nearly made the car undriveable. Turns out the Exedy HD clutch wasn't faulty at all as it had the same problems as the genuine toyota when 1st put in, just another dodgy toyota. After 2 weeks shudder was quite bad and took it back in to southside for the 3rd time, they installed new flywheel and updated clutch. It is kind of better than the std ones but still has shudder, massive shudder in reverse up hills and when in a traffic jam crawling forward.

Toyota have now come back to me and stated that it is bad fuel and dirty injectors and the Prado rims causing this and that the clutch is working fine. They have not been able to explain to me why the shudder is only there when the clutch is being used, when the clutch is out and the car is moving forward under idle there is no shudder, when the clutch is out reversing up a hill there is no shudder.

I have had two independent mechanics look at it and both of them have stated that it is the clutch and nothing to do with fuel/injectors/rims, as it is onto it's 5th clutch and is only at 64,000kms I'm starting to think it may be something else causing the shudder.

Does anyone have any ideas about this shudder?

my clutch had been making a squeeky noise for about the last 2 weeks and this morning on the way to work the rev guage jumped up while the motor was loaded up a hill.. seems these clutches aren't worth pissing on judging from these posts. it has done only 78500km's only towed a car on a trailer twice. calling toyota tomorrow morning about this one to see the outcome, i don't want a genuine but even if it is under warranty. hopefully i could pay the difference in price??. i will post an update by the end of the week.

toyota had the ute on thrusday arvo & friday and done nothing with it so i picked it up on friday arvo. dropped it back to them yesterday so they could pull it down and submit photos (while keeping the box out) and got a call today saying the lot is getting replaced all under warranty.
on sunday i got a snake camera through the rubber boot on the fork and pushed the clutch fork to move the thrust bearing right off the pressure plate fingers and saw that they were worn out quite abit from the bearing.
they said friday i pick it up

update.
i got a call on my way home from work today and picked my ute up already.
it got the flywheel machined, new clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing and fork. feels much better to drive and no squeak  .. time to rewire my chip back up now ;)
i hope any of you who are having dramas with your clutches get it all sorted out.

Just had the lux serviced today....Throw out or spiggot bearing has started making noises recently. Also mentioned how occasionally you can smell the clutch burning when on the beach or reversing up a steep driveway etc. Clutch shuddered a lot when I first got it too which was noted on the first service.

Now booked in thursday for a new clutch which will be replaced under warranty.

Was one of the first to POLL way back when it started
did three clutches in 40,000 all replaced under warranty even had the the so called toyota upgrade done finally installed NPC custom clutch(Brisbane located) at 40,000 which at the time was cheaper than a Genuine one
now at 90,000 never had even one issue with it
spent last week on fraser and pulled(Snatched) three vehicles bogged to the chassis,Patrol,Ranger,Landrover and not even a hint of slippage or smell
all i can say to the guys that want warranty
DONT EVEN BOTHER BECAUSE YOU WILL JUST BE DOING THE SAME MONTHS LATER
bite the bullet and put in aftermarket and never worry again
cheers Drew (DLUXV6)

I voted not yet, however I had to replace the spigot bearing due to water crossings and desided while the gearbox was out to just replace the clutch with an after market one "extreme clutch".

I really think toyota are going down hill.

My 1998 2.7 petrol dual cab with a fair bit of barwork and other 4wd/touring junk bolted on has done 255000 kilometers on the factory clutch and it takes a bit of slip to get it going on steep hills etc. I expect it to last to 300k + when i plan on buying a 2009 d4d auto.

Also my grandfather's troopy was a 2h diesel, it was loaded up as a work truck during the week, toured the country loaded up with junk and a heavy offroad caravan and it was still on the factory clutch when he sold it with 330k+

I know that the d4d has more power and torque than the other mentioned vehicles but some of that would be countered buy not needing to abuse the clutch on hills and in reverse.
