Poll: How many times has your clutch died?

I spoke to my dealer the other day and they are going to replace it. Apparently a new heavy duty clutch is out soon for the new hilux but toyota wont supply one until a direct replacement of the original clutch has been performed, so I got 20000ks to wreck the new one ... Somehow I don't think it will be a problem considering the first clutch starting slipping around 15000k's (I just got used to it but boat ramps give me the heebyjeebies)

Clutch is cactus. Hilux 2007 TD Dualcab, 12,000km. No towing, light 4WDing, careful driving. Replaced with an Exedy CK7678 HD (at my cost) with Goldfields Toyota doing the replacement labour etc at their cost. I didn't want another Toyota clutch in there to fail out in the sticks.

I agree with Skog; particularly if you are towing, or loaded or pulling in high ratio up a steepish hill. If you've got to rev the engine higher before engaging the clutch you're putting a lot more stress on the clutch. And, if you put over-diameter tyres on you are making first gear even taller. It also comes down to the fact that the hilux turbo diesel needs revs to hit reasonable torque (smaller engine, lower swept volume). I reckon there's also a good chance that the clutch used on the diesels is also used through-out the whole range, in which case it would battle to cope with the stress a diesel puts on it compared to a petrol (I may be wrong about this).

I find its not just first gear but reverse aswell, when I have the 31 MTZ s on I either have to give it a heap of revs or slip it into low range to reverse out of my driveway and do the same in first when dring out, which I wouldn't call steep, whith the standard wheels it doesn't seem to bother it as much, the only solution I can find at the moment is to change the diff ratio, and I think mines on the way out

My clutch died today at 28,500km on the clock, wasnt to happy waiting to pick it up next week.

there is no such thing as a heavy duty one , only redesigned clutch and pressure plate , different material used for friction plate see CLUTCH THREAD
Mine is getting new style as i am now on dead 2nd one going for number 3 in only 35,500 k's

Hi guys,

I have 2008 SR turbo diesel, new clutch fitted at 16000kms (last week). I offered to pay extra for a heavy duty clutch but the dealer said they replace with the standard clutch, no such thing as a heavy duty clutch. When I asked what is to stop it slipping again he simply said some do/some don't. I travel with a slide-on camper and also tow a boat, probably up on max weight but am very careful with clutch, even use low range when launching the boat, yet it did slip and smell quite bad from day one. I am heading from Canberra to Weipa tomorrow with fingers crossed.

i still have the same clutch after 80000kms but i have just had the 3rd throw out bearing replaced. cant remember what the mechanic said but was something about toyota re engineering something on the bearing. will find out the ins and outs tomorrow

116000km, just fitted a new exedy heavy duty clutch, Clutch plate was still good but the pressure plate was toast on the old one. I bought the vehicle second hand but there is signs thats it has been done before(someone has broken part of the reverse light switch)

For those that do not know, the exedy clutch comes with a genuine clutch place, and a heavy duty pressure plate, and throw out bearing.

i think i have a problem with my clutch it makes funny noise when im droping gears and on compesion lock ups i have already had my master cylender replaced and will show the service manager the latest isue next service only done 70,000kms

Geez hissan, does your rig have a toilet and shower? You must live in it. That's alot of km's. Good effort by the clutch though.

Just over 50,000km and going strong, until today.

Leaving the beach, in 2nd gear 4wd as I always do, got a run up at the dune and was going great until the front wheels caught a rut and turned sharply on me. Lost all momentum, quickly grabbed 1st and tried to keep it moving but it stopped, quickly into reverse to back out and nothing, no wheel spin, nothin. 1st again and no drive, just a stink from the clutch. Got out and dug the sand away from the backs of the wheels and lowered the tyre pressure further, backed out ok and made it up the 2nd try.

Now almost an hour later and 30 km more driving my clutch still stinks.

Im thinking this isnt a good sign, seems to be working ok but the smell.

What do you guys that have wrecked clutches think ? ?

EDIT" Adding in over 2 yrs later for historical purposes.
My clutch was replaced no questions at all by Toyota. I explained to the service head guy what happened on the beach and he booked my ute in for a clutch relpacment without even driving it !!

have nearly 15000 on my custom clutch (modified safari) and no issues at all
this was my 4th clutch in 40000 3 stockers and now this one
smell will go away in couple days, smoked my last clutch and stunk for just under week
dont bother putting in OEM they are useless

The best way to test if your clutch is catcus is put it in 4th at about 60k's and floor it, in the high gear at lower speed will put maximum load on the clutch and if its gone it will slip (ie: revs go up but no acceleration).

When you heat your clutch up and its starts to slip you start to glase the pressure plate/flywheel, by letting it cool it can come good but keeping at it when its really hot you will eventually cook the clutch disc, the factory organic clutch discs dont like heat which comes from slipping the clutch. The best advice I can give is if you smell the clutch after giving it a hard time let it cool right down before going at it again, otherwise clutch failure will be just around the corner.

my ute has done 145000km and the clutch has only slipped twice, once when bogged in snow, and another when i was towing around a burnt out au falcon (which was on its roof) up a hill and it got snaged on a rock

Am on my 3rd Hilux, the first two(93 and 99 model) I couldnt fault. I just bought a 2007 hilux with 48000 kms and on our first beach fishing expedition had the clutch let go in some heavy sand near the low tide mark on a south coast beach. Not a good feeling at all being stuck with the ocean lapping at the back tyres and no way of driving out. Luckily a bloke came along in of all things a Hyundai Santa Fe and we managed to snatch it out and after things had cooled down the clutch started working again. Not happy though, will have to look at installing a better clutch set up than this!
