2007 D4D original clutch replaced at 145000km. Installed 4Terrain which has done 6500km so far including 3200km 5 week trip round Cape York. Feel is really good. Also have a 1992 Surf that I have never replaced the clutch on in 180000km (oh hang on that one's auto)

I've got my Hilux in for it's first (1000km) service and have mentioned the clutch shudder between 2nd and 3rd gear.
I've driven heaps of these and they all have some kind of shudder at least.
To his credit the dealer openly acknowledged the crappy clutch and said that if I wanted them to install an aftermarket they had done plenty of them and could do it for me too.
This ones not anything like as bad as the 06 was, and he said that they'd get involved if it broke down or started slipping.
At least he was honest and didn't blow me off.
If it did fully fail (which it won't), I'd hit them up to cover the labour under warranty and supply them with an aftermarket clutch/flywheel kit like we're fitting to our 06 at the moment.
Personally, once I see the 06 run with the new clutch and if I like it, I might just go that way and treat it like fitting heavier suspension, etc.
Just something you do to make it better...

hi Kat0086

just wondering if you had any joy with your clutch i have 2012 TD d/cab and have noticed a nice clutch burn smell when pulling boat out or on sand in 1st gear ,i think that the gearings or wrong with this model 1st gear has no pulling power, the old 98 model had no issues this one i need to be in low range 1st to do the same job the 98 did in 1st gear.

cheers

scott

Toyota said they couldn't hear anything and last weekend I attempted to reverse up a driveway in H4, got halfway up then didn't go anywhere with my foot right off the pedal . I know they run a dual mass fly-wheel set up,, has anyone got any suggestions on after market clutches,my car has 22,000 kms on it now and i doubt that a genuine Toyota clutch will fix the problem

Mines got 6k on the clock. Went to tow the empty horse float up the driveway, (short steep bit from road to cattle grid, then flattens out to a gradual climb) 1st gear 2WD wouldnt pull up, just smoked the clutch. Foot completely off the pedal.
I spoke to toyota here and they had a look and said its all in spec blah blah but if it gives me any more trouble they will replace it. Toyota say that I shouldn't have trouble with it as the new ones have the Prado clutch in them, but I call bullshit!

My 2011 Hilux clutch was replaced under warranty at 18 months old & 50000 km its a common fault that they have weak clutches its actually the pressure plate which isnt up to scratch

Just had a Clutch Industries 4Terrain fitted to my 2009 old girl (80000km). Previous clutch burned regularly when reversing our trailer up the drive way. Heading into the Simpson shortly now with camper and new clutch, will give you a recommendation on its performance post trip (after the 1100 Dunes). So far feel it feels very solid though was advised by mechanic that all pedals should be adjusted once clutch beds (they leave the floor).
Purchased and fitted for $1175..!! $700 cheaper than ARB's quote for same.
Toyota should be ashamed given the tally and comments so far on this thread. They continue to market on our goodwill for their Hilux's. (Never get so comfortable in a relationship that you forget you can be replaced.)

Talking about replacement, my steering rack was found to be destroyed by rust (never seen a beach) and they wouldn't replace it ($3000). Will be researching all Makes and Models before signing lease for my 5th Hilux. No goodwill this time Mr Toyota, from me at least!

My 2012 Lux is in tomorrow for its 20k service and i want them to check out my clutch. There is "the shudder" that has been mentioned in other threads, and pedal travels almost all the way out before engaging at times. I went to take off on a steep hill the other day and it seemed to take for ever to engage and move.

I had mine replaced by Toyota (under warranty) at roughly 40,000 because it shuddered from new, it shuddered straight away when I drove it from the dealership... I thought ill give it some time to bed in.... no difference at 50,000 so I ripped that one out and put in a heavy duty clutch from DIRECT CLUTCH SERIVECES in Albony (Brisbane) great to deal with and I haven't had an issue since with slipping or shuddering... I am now just shy of 90,000 and still grinning :D . I love my Hilux and that's the only issue ive had with it... just wish Toyota would take some ownership and fix the issue....

Since running larger tyres (31's), I definitely think there is a lot more load put on the clutch during take off

I don't know the sales figures, but there are that many hilux's being sold. I'd hope that there are more people with no problems than ones with problems. I wouldn't let it put you off buying one, deal with it through warranty if you do, or bite the bullet and put in HD clutch.

Try taking it to a different dealer! I've found that warranty claims are dealer specific some will do anything while others are plain outright arseholes

No they are a solid flywheel apparently. My 2012 was fried at 13000km and they said they will pull it apart and inspect it and send pics to Toyota and they may pay for it at their disscression. So I said if they refuse to pay then under no circumstance put a Toyota clutch in it and I would supply a hd clutch. They did agree to do under warrant after all but it's a piss poor way of dealing with customers in my opinion. I also asked if I could pay the difference between the own and a heavy duty but they wouldn't have a bar of that.

thanks for that. i went too south morang melbourne dealer they said they cant do it bc they they have the tools t wat a load of shit if a major dealer doesnt hav the tools to do a mechanical work wat r they doin as a service center that services cars?? anyways i went to a different (preston) dealer and they wouldnt reply to 3 phone calls n messages. finally got onto them they said $1300 to put it apart and send some pics off like u.and if its wear n tear i pay the cost. i asked them bout if ill supply them with a hd clutch can they put it in? Nope we don't want anything to do with a non toyota part??? work that one out!!! so instead of gambling with them il just get a clutch industry 4 terrain installed for $1100. wats to say they put a toyota clutch in n it does that same shit.(havnt got the time or patience for that shit) ill just pretend that im doin an upgrade on my lux like how we upgrade our suspension to make me feel that little bit better lol. such is life. deep down i want to still believe that hilux is the best ute on the market just shit lik this makes me question.

Had mine replaced at 280,000 gearbox was out to be fixed and there was almost no clutch material left at all. Was an aisin, so may have been the original. Car has been in the family since 130,000.

I have a 1998 2.7 my clutch works. ;)
