My first 3 cars were Auto's(including one of those being a 4WD). And I've driven an auto hilux in both diesel and petrol. I prefer my manual D4D. I can't see myself ever buying another auto. Or a petrol for that matter (project V8's excepted :-D )

There are 2 answers in the poll which are pretty much the same: 'Once' and 'on the second one'.
Assuming that you replaced the first clutch, you would be on the second one... unless you are now driving your ute without a clutch

Just thought you may want to combine the numbers.

Haha. I didn't even spot that. Good one Harry. Oh well, we'll just have to add the figures in our heads...

Reckon if Toyota made 1st gear a bit shorter/lower in ratio it would also take alot of the strain off the clutch as well. I reckon it's geared to tall in first.

I agree with Skog; particularly if you are towing, or loaded or pulling in high ratio up a steepish hill. If you've got to rev the engine higher before engaging the clutch you're putting a lot more stress on the clutch. And, if you put over-diameter tyres on you are making first gear even taller. It also comes down to the fact that the hilux turbo diesel needs revs to hit reasonable torque (smaller engine, lower swept volume). I reckon there's also a good chance that the clutch used on the diesels is also used through-out the whole range, in which case it would battle to cope with the stress a diesel puts on it compared to a petrol (I may be wrong about this).
IF A MAN TALKS IN THE FOREST AND THERE IS NO WOMAN TO HEAR HIM, IS HE STILL WRONG?

Had my clutch replaced for the first time at 237,000ks yesterday. The new clutch feels a lot better and there is no squealing anymore (but will have to give it time and see). I think it was an excedy clutch that was put in. My original clutch started squealing at about 80,000ks and only just started shuddering hence why i had it replaced.

Pids, from my experience 237,000km in a 4WD is pretty good. I'd be happy with that. As I said, I haven't replaced mine (32,000km) and my mate had his replaced recently (195,000)

I think it would be interesting to find out of those that have had their clutch replaced, at how many km's they had to get it done. I've heard of people getting them replaced before 10,000km and others, like Pids, had his replaced at 237,000 (although should have done it a lot earlier).

I have to use 1st Low range to get started at the lights on a moderate hill with the plant trailer on the back. 2.4 tonne. Drive slowly until it levels of a bit then slip it back into 1st gear 2wd High Range on the fly. Takes a bit of concentration as normally you'd be going for 2nd gear and not shifting the transfer case lever to go up a ratio.
It works ok in a straight line as the diffs dont bind up have to be careful though if going around a corner at lights.(take a huge radius turn).
Sometimes I wish I bought an SR5 so I could disengage the ADD and effectively get a 2wd low range, and have a splitter type gearbox like a truck.
My clutch had another moment today, slipped for a slight second then grabbed. While taking off at the lights. Unloaded.
I dont expect Toyota to do warranty work on it, as I have fitted so much aftermarket gear on it and pushed it beyond any reasonable driving limits and to fit another substandard clutch I reckon would be crazy.
Still waiting for the it to give up. 58000 on the clock.

About 44% replacement rate to date, It would be interesting to know how many Toyota have replaced.
