Front v's rear locker

I agree with everything you have said Mmaxx, although you could add one point. If you are considering changing ratios to counter bigger tyres etc. Then the front locker is an option for the ease of changing ratios. And while the mechanic is changing your rear ratio get him to shim the clutches up a bit to improve the bite from the rear. All in all I think I will save my pennies and get both and the gear sets changed at once.

So I have read the whole thread and after seeing some of the differences between rear and front lockers on the weekend with the Triton boys. I ask the below

All of you guy's who have front lockers only, would you do the front again if you had your time over or would you go the rear first?

I’m thinking of locking the front and having the rear shimmed, comments on this option?

Mick, when i went away with a couple of triton boys last time at morgan, my lux only had the front locker and all the triton boys had the factory rear lockers. My lux seemed to have the edge over the rear lockers only one triton could make it up the track i went up with my front engaged.
IMHO the rear is easier to live with, but the front gives better traction but at the same time i damaged my bbar once because i lost all rear traction and the front slid into the edge of the track.
If i done it again id still go front first because of the better traction, however if i was planing on touring more with a load i would go rear first.

Thanks Troy, confirming my thoughts.

Amazing how good the rear factory triton lock is, was very impressed.

Like you said up a steep bit in Coffs called "Pupa Bear" a front locked car just drove up it and the rear locked boys had to use more speed and a couple of goes.

yeah there isnt alot in it, but its still a small advantage having front first.

The new FJ Cruiser comes out with factory diff lock . Would this fit in a Hilux ??? Just A thought

I'm more concerned with the situations like in my avatar where you have opposite wheels off the ground and you are going nowhere, is it better to push the car or pull it through.

From what I’ve seen steep uphill front is better and for all other rear seems to be the best.

I've got twin Arb lockers love em put it this way I broke lots of cvs and other bits in my old truck now in my new truck I haven't broken nothing as you can just crawl up just about anything

Has anyone noticed if their locker into a SR5 had the needle roller bearing inside the casing or just a bush, passenger side

The SR model is just a bush but the SR5 with A.D.D had a needle roller (STD)

Wondering how long the bush will last on an SR5
being picky but would be good to know.

First up I have a rear locker, and would love a front but as Mick suggested the financial restraints of family life make it a long term goal. Anyway my point is on Mount Walker this weekend jamfx69 and his beasty hilux was in big trouble trying to climb it. He has lockers front and rear. Once he broke his momentum it didnt matter what he did he just kept digging in. He thought he had both lockers on but it turned out the front wasnt activated
Once he flicked the switch he was away no problem. It just reaffirmed my belief that front and rear are a great addition to our trucks.

yer kyle, ive being in a few situations where ive gone thru some deepish ruts on sandy soil, rear locker in coz i know im going to lift a rear, but coz of the angle, the rear thats on the ground is just digging holes and the front is doing nothing coz a wheel is off the ground, but flick the front locker on and just cruise out... I cnt really say which one is more effective individually coz mine r wired so the front can only be used if the rear is already in. But rear is very gud for downhill decents as the brakes work the in a similar way to how the torque splits in an unlocked diff, if u have a wheel off the ground under brakes it will lock up and braking force will not be devided evenly...thats my understanding from my experiences anyways

I think a fair summary of the which is better front versus back debate is :

If you carrying a load (tourer setup) get a rear, if you have no weight in your tray the front is probably a better option.
I have a rear locker only and usually have my loaded canopy on, the last couple of times that I went out on the trails I had an empty tray and noticed that the lack of weight over the rear axle reduces the effectiveness of the rear locker traction.

Twin locked is best!
