Rattle from front end

Postby sharp018 on Mon, 22 May 2017 1:51 +0000

Hey guys my car has been doing this for a while

I only notice it when on corragated roads or any offroad tracks

What happens is as I'm driving sounds like a bolt is sticking half way out with about a dozen washers on it all rattling so frustraighting but can't pin point what it is

I've checked the following
CVS good
Upper control arm bushes and bolts good and tight
Lower control arm bushes and bolts tight also made sure the castor mounts wernt bent in which there not

Sway bar is tight and bushes are fine.
The shocker rubbers and nuts and bolts are fine

Running out of ideas
I can bearly check wheel bearings because soon as I lift my car off the ground the CV angles are that bent I can't even spin the wheel

2006 Toyota Hilux D4D 4wd Dual Cab Chassis Man

33 inch Federal Courigias
4 inch profender stage 2 lift kit, coil overs with remote ressi shocks and superior engineering upper control arms and sway bar relocators plus the 1 inch drop diff

Bar work bullbar, rock sliders , steel tray, and winch

Only other thing I could think it is is the Ball Joints or Wheel Bearings

Oh yeah forgot to mention noise goes really quiet if I apply the brakes

Uts not just the anti squeal shims in behind the brake pads? Dunno if I like the sound of ya not being able to spin a front wheel when its off the ground!

correct me if I'm wrong but you should still be able to check for play in your bearings even if you cant get your wheels to spin when jacked up... also if you suspect bearings check for temperature after you go for a drive if very hot then they are stuffed

Cheers mate I'll have to do that.

I like to be able to spin the wheel hear if it sounds rough but I know the basic push and pull on the wheel see if there's wobble haven't tried it yet.

Either do I Toyz!!!

I did however lower the coilovers not that long ago dunno if it will help might try jacking it up today and having another look other wise thinking of booking it in

Just wish I had a camrea I could stick down there so I can test it whilst driving cos you only hear it when moving on bumpy roads

Big cv problems if you cant turn the wheels at full drop because of extreme cv angle.
Reduce the coilover height so at least you can turn the wheel by hand at full droop.

What brand coil overs to you have? How many km?
Sounds like top hat suspension bush worn out - depending on what brand, there are both external and internal bushes.
With wheels on the ground you should be able to undo the top hat nut (Dont completely undo if it looks like the bolt stem is going to disappear inside the strut. You will need to reduce coil height further if so.)
If the shock bolt stem is wiggling around with top hat nut loose that will cause the rattling sound you describe.

I'll have to have a look haven't had a chance maybe try tomorrow

The strut top hat is fine there isn't any wobble, the bush is still in prestine condition

Doesn't really make sense as to when I apply the breaks it kinda disappears

Think what Toyzx has said seems to be more relivent but I will check it all again anyway cheers

One easy check - look for wear in the caliper slider bushes, when they do wear it can allow the caliper to float and would also potentially be why the rattle stops when the caliper is clamped under braking....

When you say caliper slider bushes what do you mean

Because the way these calipers are set up it has 2 long pins that go through to hold the pads in place with a a spring at the back holding them in. Like unless the pins are worn it could make a noise but the pins are made so it's not a super tight fit so the brake pads can still slide easily

The are two bolts that hold the caliper in place go in to the caliper pins- the whole caliper slides over these two pins. It has to slide because as the pads may wear unevenly the caliper has to remain centred on the rotor. There is a dust boot on each one and its common practice when you push the brake piston back when doing pads - you remove and grease the pins.

If the car has seen dirt, salt or coal and these pins have never been serviced they can flog out and if they do then your caliper is free to float on the pins......

Got a picture link below that is a good likeness of the caliper.

Nah mate there different calipers. I know what you mean however

With that type of caliper you can take of the bottom slide pin and fling it up to replace pads ect.

Hiluxes arnt set up like that, the caliper is 2 half's bolted together and the brake pads go in side and are held in with 2 long pins

Not normal no
Wouldn't be suprised if the cvs are making the noise. That inner cv looks wrecked
Are the coils fully uncompressed?
