Massive Transmission oil leak.

Postby pure spirit on Tue, 07 Mar 2017 7:54 +0000

Hi All

Looking for some suggestions or a pre warning of what I'm in for.

Guess the problems started a couple of days ago (background SR5 D, 170k auto 2011) just after take off seemed to have trouble changing gears for a brief moment then sorted it self and was right. Yesterday afternoon started it put into drive and would not deliver power put into park then back into drive and was fine ( it's just about due for a service so figured I'd mention it then) . About 20 minutes later (say 15km or so) got slowed down with a accident on the express way and was going stop start and seem to have trouble finding a gear. Once i past the accident got going again was up to about 90kmph but would not shift gear was running about 4000rpm so pulled up to a breakdown lane as i did this i noticed smoke. On getting out of the car i could seem the oil and the under body was a mess (guess the smoke was from oil on the exhaust). Had no warning lights or codes, was hard to tell where it was coming from but was transmission oil (looked a fair bit off colour) checked the level via the dip stick and it still had some but was low. Anyway got it towed to the mechanics and now waiting for news..... checked where i park at home and no signs of a leak and same at work.
Looking for any past experience of this or ideas.

Many thanks

Just had an update from the mechanic,

At first they thought it might have been the front seal (as they filled it and ran it and that's where the oil came from) but he spoke to the company expert who as soon as he heard the make - model said it was to do with the converter and pump pushing oil out the front seal (much of it was lost on me - more so after hearing the cost) but will require full rebuild with new pump and converter etc .
Cost is $5800

thoughts please ....

$5800 sounds expensive maybe look into a recon second hand auto. Id call around a few transmission mobs and ask a few questions.

Be careful driving a car with a leaking auto trans as auto trans fluid has a tendency to catch fire when very hot E.g. hot exhaust ... I realise that this does not apply to you anymore as your car is already getting sorted out just keep it in mind in case it happens again

in 1998 Ford replaced a transmission in my company car, (Falcon ute) under warranty. 165000 ks, and the companies only cost was the tow.
The vehicle had always been serviced by the Ford dealer though, so that probably helped.

But it ain't gonna hurt to send a nice email to the stealership and ask the question...

Be nice but have not taken it to a deal for a service since fixed price finished at 60k so don't like my chances

I know this isn't going to help you but might help others, in that 170k did you ever have the transmission fluid changed or the transmission serviced? Did it do much heavy work? did it have a cooler fitted?

Not saying you have done anything wrong, just hoping the money I have been spending on my auto might be preventing this sort of thing.

Plz keep us informed with what the professionals have to say about it and I would recommend that you talk personally to some transmission specialists to see if it is a common fault. These transmissions have been around long enough now for the prices to have become more reasonable. For 5800 id even ring a dealership and ask them how much a new one is.

I have a 2011SR D4D Single cab, that is a 4 speed, my 2010 sr dualcab was a 4speed. I thought the SR5 was like the D4D Prado 120 and a 5 speed.

Hi mate

What was your end result. My car has just done the exact same things as yours did?

Cheers

If you need a replacement autoXr8tdd there should be plenty of these old 4spd autos around now in wrecks. All 4x4 in Newcastle would be worth a try. They tend to wreck write-offs so you may luck a car that has been looked after but has been a Stat writeoff due to chassis bend or airbags deployed etc.
