Bob, I would suggest getting your head unit repaired could prove expensive and not necessarily end the problems. Many here have fitted aftermarket head units and the cost isn't prohibitive but repair might be a blank cheque with doubtful success. It may be worth checking with someone who does electronic repairs as to cost but it appears Toyota has washed its hands of these units and even they have gone to something else.
As to semiconductors etc. Yes many electronic items made in China have been made to the design specifications but using low cost components and the outcome is inevitable. Electronic repairers are often able to replace the inferior component to make the unit better than new but it can be expensive to replace a capacitor worth $2 because the labour needed to find the fault is quite unpredictable. Someone who has intimate knowledge about the problem could fix it but it can be like opening a can of worms, some hobbyists replace components easily but first they must understand what is causing the issue.

Might be worth checking this thread, or finding a 2nd hand one at a wreckers.

Had this problem on my MY12 - whole right side lost touch (where you need it the most). Changed it over to a Kenwood DDX919WS head unit with Bluetooth, Apple Car Play & Android Auto which is a perfect fit to the dash and all steering wheel controls etc.. been a great unit after 3yrs use..

Quick update.

Asked my local toyota service centre for quote for fixing this. They put in a claim for me with toyota Australia for an out of warranty repair, considering I am the original owner with full service history.

Knocked back by Toyota Aust. but they said they would replace it for me for $1000+ dollars, and it would be the same model head unit with no guarantee that the same problem wouldn't happen again.

Went to a local car audio shop and replaced it with a Sony unit. 100% full compatibility with the steering wheel controls etc plus android/apple.

Only been in for a day now, but my impressions are

Bigger screen
Better sound
Easy to use
Android auto
Voice recognition/control actually works
No gps - uses phones gps with android auto for navigation, which means up to date maps
No cd player. But I have never put a cd in the old one in 8 years I have owned it

Only downside I can see so far is the instructions say have to re input the settings if power is disconnected.
