Im Currently looking at a Used 2006 Hilux SR 4x4 3.0 Turbo Diesal. It currently has 139,000 km's. I will be using this car mainly for around town driving here in Sydney but also for the occasional off road trip with mates. How many more km's can i expect to get out of the Hilux and is 22500 AUD worth it? What sort of servicing costs would I be looking at soon if I brought it?

Don't know how long the current hilux engine will last, but I have a 1993 2.8D that has done over 400,000km (shows under that but the speedo didn't work for 18 months and only works intermitantly now).

139,000km is a lot for a 2 year old vehicle, I do a LOT of driving for work and I have done 80,000km in the same amount of time. I'm not saying it is bad, just that it is high.

Considering how tough the Hilux engines have been historically and the fact that the asking price is $22,500 I would personally buy it. That is cheep, even with those kays on it. Get a full mechanical insoection on it by someone who knows their toyota's just to make sure all is ok, I saw a post on here about a turbo replaced under warranty. That is the only turbo failure I have heard of in these utes, but it always pays to get it checked out.

If you do buy it, good luck and hope you get it off road.

Generally speaking, Toyota diesel's are reliable vehicles from which you could expect around 300,000km of mostly trouble free driving.
If the vehicle has a service history and checks out OK (no major crashes, no water imersion, not full of beach sand and salt etc) it should be ok for many more years. Test drive it on the roughest road you can find and listen and feel for rattles and bumps that could indicate a hard life. Also find out who owned it prior and what they used it for. I test drove an ex-Forestry vehicle that had seen every corrugated dirt road in NSW before buying an ex-RSPCA truck.
The money you save by buying this vehicle could be put towards repairs and replacements parts as they arise.
My 2005 model is approaching 120,000km and has had no major repairs.
Don't forget people write on forums mainly when they have a problem. I haven't seen a topic called "My Hilux is going great, nothing to report"!

I reckon a newer vehicle with higher kms is better then a older one with low kms. It would of done alot of on road work i'd say and long running is always good on a diesel . I say go for it mate.

Service history is far more important than k's done. My 2006 has done almost 100k and I have had no issues. I saw one that had never been serviced (Very slack owner) Dead at 140k. Hard to believe that people do this but it does happen. Get it checked should be fine and price is great. Funny you mentioned that harryx5 have thought the same thing.

If you do look at it, get a compression check done. They're expensive on diesels but will give you a good clue as to how worn the motor is and good insurance for big bills in the future. IMO the most important check (along with a good service record) to make.

Mate i have 229,000 on my 05 lux with no issues so far..........touch wood. I would be hoping for at least 300,000 out of it.

My old 1992 2.8L Diesel Hilux when i sold it had 580,000 KM on it, the person i sold it to has also now just sold it 610,000 KM on it.

Had a relativly cheap rebuild done at 350,000km been great vehicle just lack of grunt ^_^., (non turbo) Body itself immaculate, no sign of rust yet, it will probably get a new engine dropped in it and keep going for another 10 years lol.

I borrowed the in-laws old 60 series on Monday while the 'lux got serviced. One owner, been to fraser every year except the last 2 since it was bought. 1 small patch of surface rust on the front guard where the daughter touched the brick wall of the garage. It's seen 3 kids learn how to drive and done 425,000km. I could not believe how well it drives. The old diesel kicks over first try, idles smoothly, takes off as well as you'd expect from an old diesel and does 110km/h quite happily. No engine work done, no rebuilds. Just regular servicing.

Goes to show that Toyota can do it properly when they want.

I would aim for around the 160,000km or lower if I was to do it again, make sure the timing belt has been done.

na ill be buying private. and yea i wouldnt look at one unless it has perfect service history and pass a mechanical check, and ill prob be driving around 20-30 k kms a year. so yea i just wanted to know the estimate of when these engines start to struggle and loose power. thanks

Struggling and loosing power come down to how the service history is.

Mine still feels like it has alot of go, whereas someone that has one tank of bad fuel and then the power is gone for them.

Really mix and match, test driving is the only way to know, and if it feels good to you then, with good service intervals it should stay that way for some time.

Blokes on here have rigs with 260000->300000km's on them and still going strong.

Mines a late 05 D4D manual with 294,000km on it and still pulls wicked doughnuts in first and 2nd gears swinging 32's and unfortunately only 1st gear swinging 33.5's.

If you have the time there is photos and videos of this happening posted on the forum somewhere.....

Put the rear locker in and it will lite up the 32's in 3rd gear in a straight line in the wet

Just my 2 cents worth.
Im a Toyota Used Car Manager, And we see a lot of Hilux's, Currently Ive got 2 on my lot done over 150KLM both are 09 plates.
Ive seen them come through with 300KLM + and still going, But on the flip side ive seen the with under 50KLM and the are in the workshop for injectors (dirty fuel we all know what this can do)
Ive seen Prado's come through in the current shape with 250KLM on them as well, and yep they were still going strong.
I did my apparentaship with Toyota many years ago and have been with the brand for over 15 years.
In my Time I have see 2 60series diesels with over 1 million KLM and ive seen a couple of 75 series with over the 1 million KLM,
The long and the short of it, they are motor cars, they will look after you if you look after them, Regardless of what the book says I would give any vehicle I've just purchased a very good service, and yes all the indipendant mechanical inspections are good, but they are only as good as the inspector.
Its always a case of buyer be-ware.
But the hilux is failry unbreakable. But it is possible to break them.

its not only a dirty fuel issue, my last hilux needed injectors at 60k, i only ever used fuel from a large BP near me, i doubt the diesel was in their tanks long enough to get dirty
